Joseph waved a hand. “Go home.”

“Thanks,” Grace said it again.

Joseph cracked a smile. “You’ve said that hundred times already. Go on.”

Grace looked at him, saw he was busy, and left.

Joseph watched her go. A thought crossed his mind.

She was not bad.

Anthony walked back in and caught Joseph staring at the door. He smirked. “If you like her, go for it. You’re not getting any younger.”

“Not as old as you.” Joseph looked away.

“Hit a nerve, did I?” Anthony snorted and headed upstairs.

As he passed Lydia’s private room, the birthday song was playing. He glanced through the crack in the door.

The room was lively. Lydia stood in the middle, her son Mark Hawthorne beside her.

Lydia saw him too.

They both looked away.

On the balcony, Daisy watched Anthony. Something tightened in her chest–a knot she couldn’t breathe around.

Lynn walked over. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Daisy smiled and turned to look at the kids setting off fireworks downstairs.

Lynn was about to say something when she saw Anthony heading their way.

She took the hint and left.

Daisy pressed her lips together. “I saw Lydia. Did you?”

“Yes.” Anthony didn’t deny it.

Daisy flinched and stepped aside. She’d thought it was Lynn talking to her. Lynn was across the room now, playing with the babies alongside Isabelle.

“You’re upset.” Anthony watched her.

Daisy rarely lost her cool in front of him. She was usually so carefree. When Anthony had faced off with Lydia before, Daisy hadn’t batted an eye. But now, he could see something–a flicker of unhappiness.

She forced a smile. “What makes you think I’m upset?”

Anthony studied her face. “Let’s go home.”

“What?”

The party had just started. Damian, Lucas, and Alaric were deep in conversation. But Anthony only wanted to go home.

“If you don’t want to see her, we’ll leave.”

“It’s not that.” Daisy turned away, not letting him read her.

She didn’t understand it herself. Lydia hadn’t done anything to her. Anthony hadn’t shown any interest in Lydia. So why did she feel this weight in her chest?

She’d seen Lydia several times before and never felt this way. Now, just catching a glimpse of her made her uncomfortable.

Anthony moved closer and stood beside her on the balcony.

Daisy decided she must be the problem.

“Mr. Vale.”

A small voice came from behind them. They both turned.

It was Mark. He was holding a slice of cake, a sweet smile on his face.

“It’s Mom’s birthday. She cut this for me to bring to you. She said thank you.” Mark held out the cake.

Anthony glanced at Daisy. She wasn’t looking at him–she was looking at Lydia, standing not far away, half–hidden.

Anthony didn’t want to take it. But Daisy reached out and did it for him. “Tell your mom thank you. Anthony doesn’t like sweets, but I do.”

Mark nodded and ran off.

Anthony looked at the cake in Daisy’s hands. She was holding it like it was a bomb about to go off.

Sure enough, she shoved it back at him.

“Feed me,” she said.

Anthony held the cake and looked at her puffed–up cheeks.

He obediently fed her a bite.

He was smiling. Why?
