Daisy couldn’t even defend herself.

This wasn’t the old Anthony. The man who barely spoke, who wouldn’t even hold hands in public, let alone do anything remotely affectionate where people could see–that man was gone. Now he wanted to be glued to Daisy all day, and when he wasn’t with her, he was at home with the two little ones.
Lynn leaned in and whispered, “I saw him use his tongue.”
“Shut up, Lynn!” Daisy’s face was on fire.
She’d thought no one noticed.
“Mr. Vale has been trained well,” Isabelle said, genuinely curious. “I’ve never seen Anthony like this. He used to walk away after three sentences.”
Daisy could only manage a weak laugh.
She had no idea either.
Before all this, Anthony was the kind of man one couldn’t pay to see. If it hadn’t been for that night, for the fact that even after taking the pill and getting her period the next day she still got pregnant, she might have gone her whole life without ever crossing paths with him again.
She’d made peace with being alone forever.
Then Anthony walked through her door. And in that moment, she felt like she wanted to grab onto something.
Normally, she would never have said something like my children need a father. How desperate would that
sound?
She’d rather raise the twins on her own.
But it was Anthony.
She’d had some unnameable feeling about him for a long time. She could never put her finger on it.
When she saw him, it hit her. The scar, still raw, still shocking, didn’t matter. Daisy knew the feeling immediately. She liked him.
She’d already embarrassed herself by sleeping with him. What was one more embarrassment?
She hadn’t expected him to feel the same way.
“Look at you, blushing!” Lynn laughed.
Daisy’s face burned.
She used to tease other people without a second thought. Now that the tables had turned, she felt

On the drive home, Daisy pressed her face against the window and watched the streetlights blur past.
She thought about how childish she’d been earlier.
Why was she jealous of Lydia?
Lydia and Anthony were ancient history. But the moment she’d seen her, something had twisted inside
her.
She told herself it was just because she’d grown too fond of Anthony lately, too dependent on him.
Anthony watched her silhouette. “Still mad?”
“Hmm?” Daisy came back to herself. “No. Not mad.”
“Come here.”
He reached for her. Daisy scooted closer. He pulled her onto his lap and held her tight.
He was so much taller than she that she practically disappeared in his arms.
Daisy felt his heartbeat. It was off. She patted his back. “What’s wrong? Seeing your ex brought back bad memories?”
Anthony frowned and loosened his grip. He looked at her. “No. Daisy Clark, don’t paint me like that.”
He said her full name. Serious.
“Then what’s wrong?” She could tell his mood wasn’t right.
“I was afraid you were still upset.” He held her hands. “You weren’t talking to me. Wasn’t that because you
were mad?”
“Mad about what?” Daisy was almost amused. “You kissed me in front of everyone. Of course I didn’t want to talk to you. I’m shy.”
Anthony let out a soft laugh. “That’s why you wouldn’t talk to me?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were jealous of Lydia.”
“I wasn’t.” Daisy looked away. “If you still had feelings for her, there’s nothing I could do about it. I just wanted Lyra and Luna to have a father.”
Anthony cut her off. He kissed her hard. Then he said, each word deliberate, “Don’t. Ever. Say. That. Again.”
Daisy was stunned by his intensity.
