Grace gasped softly, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. She asked in a trembling voice, “Didn’t you arrange for someone to send this?”

She couldn’t help thinking Joseph was far more reserved and calculating than she’d realized. Having a candlelit dinner delivered felt like way too obvious a hint about his feelings.

“I didn’t order it,” Joseph said as he slipped off his shoes and walked inside. He glanced at the red wine and steak on the table, then turned to her. “You haven’t eaten yet, right?”

“No,” Grace shook her head.

She didn’t dare touch the meal at all.

Joseph frowned and blew out all the burning candles.

“You go take a shower first,” Joseph told her plainly.

“Okay,” Grace mumbled quietly.

Joseph grabbed his phone, stepped out onto the balcony, and called the hotel front desk first–then dialed Anthony right afterward.

Joseph asked, “Did you do this?”

Anthony said, “It wasn’t me.”

Joseph frowned. “Can’t you keep her under control? How could you let her pull something like this?”

The moment he knew Anthony wasn’t behind it, Joseph was certain it had to be Daisy.

Daisy was always pulling these little mischievous stunts. She’d even sent Lynn a custom–made perfume last time. If she weren’t already an adult, Joseph would have given her a good scolding on the spot.

He couldn’t stop worrying that there might be something mixed into the wine.

Anthony glanced over at Daisy, who sat in the passenger seat, munching on cotton candy. “I can’t rein her in one bit.”

Joseph clicked his tongue in irritation.

He’d been about to snap at Anthony, then suddenly asked, “Is there anything weird slipped into the wine?”

Anthony said, “Suppose there was–would you drink it?”

Joseph fell dead silent.

Anthony smiled, “I’m just asking. Yes or no?”

Joseph stayed quiet, and Anthony let out a low laugh. “Nothing’s added. You can drink it safely.”

Joseph ended the call, rested both palms on the balcony railing, and looked down. Dusk was creeping in, and lights from houses all over the city flickered on one after another.

He turned around just in time to see Grace walk out of the bathroom.

Grace’s gaze locked right onto his.

Joseph pushed his scattered thoughts aside and stepped back into the room. He nodded at the full table of food. “This is a free hotel perk. I’ll have staff take it down to reheat.”

“I see…” Grace murmured.

She settled onto the sofa, hugging a throw pillow tight to her chest, and listened as he called hotel staff to come pick up the food and warm it up.

Joseph looked over at her. “I’m heading out now. Call me if you need anything.”

“Mhm.” Grace nodded softly.

She’d wanted to invite him to stay and eat together–there was clearly enough for two. But she held back, afraid Joseph would misinterpret her invitation.

Shortly after Joseph left, the hotel staff arrived at the door.

Grace sat alone in the huge presidential suite. She stayed away from the wine entirely, eating her steak, her mind constantly wandering back to Joseph.

She had almost no appetite and stopped eating halfway through her portion.

That was when she spotted a small gift box sitting on the dining table.

The box had been there when the dinner cart first rolled in, and she’d assumed Joseph had prepared it specially for her.

A little surprise bubbled up in her heart, mixed with flustered awkwardness.

She picked the box up and opened it carefully.

Inside was a small foil package she’d never seen before, and she stared at it closely, studying every detail.

Her eyes widened the second she figured out what it was. She quickly stuffed the foil package back into the gift box, stood up, and stepped backward in shock.

Grace covered her burning cheeks with both hands and patted her face lightly to calm herself down.

She was so glad she hadn’t asked Joseph to stay for dinner–he would have definitely found the box.

Grace couldn’t believe how overly bold this hotel was.

A candlelit dinner was one thing, but packaging that kind of item in a fancy gift box felt like they were deliberately drawing attention to it.

That night, Grace lay in bed in the presidential suite, wide awake and unable to sleep.

Down at her apartment, Joseph lay on the sofa, staring up at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep for ages either.

Jake called him. “Boss, you not coming in tonight?”

“No,” Joseph replied, his mood restless and unsettled.

Jake asked, “Did you forget something important?”

“What is it?”

Jake paused for a beat. “Zephyr Koch put in a leave request. You’re supposed to open the bar tonight,”

Joseph froze in stunned silence.

How could I have completely forgotten about work?

Anthony made Daisy practice nonstop for nearly two hours.

Anthony had wanted to hold her in his arms as they slept, but after her shower, she lay face down on the bed and quickly drifted into a deep sleep.
