Claudia blinked. Harold sat on the living room sofa on the first floor, legs spread apart, hands folded in his lap. He leaned back with a blank, expressionless face, closing his eyes to rest.
Two small mousse cakes sat on the coffee table–odd as it seemed, they fit his vibe perfectly/no sense of
mismatch at all.
Claudia walked over and took a seat across from him.
He lifted his eyelids slightly and glanced her way.
Her eyes darted nervously, edged with quiet fright; she couldn’t bring herself to meet his gaze, her hands twisting together uneasily.
Harold slid one of the small cakes toward her.
He had no idea if Claudia would even want it.
But every girl loved sweets, so he picked up two on the way back just now.
Harold said, “Edgar’s been arrested. The police will come by tomorrow to take you in for routine questioning.”
Claudia’s heart jumped, instantly growing tense and anxious.
If this gets handled badly, it’ll drag him into trouble.
And if Edgar’s set me up somehow, I could end up locked away in jail for years.
Harold could read the worry written all over her face. “I’ll go with you tomorrow. Just answer whatever the police ask honestly–no need to hide anything on purpose.”
Claudia hesitated. “What about the equity transfer…”
Harold cut her off plainly, “Stick to saying you know nothing about it. It’s the truth anyway, you never knew a thing.”
Harold’s gaze fell to her fingers, raw and red from nervously picking at them.

Claudia looked up at him cautiously. “Will this mess affect you?”
Harold replied flatly, “Not if you don’t go running your mouth carelessly.”
His tone is so cold and unkind—not gentle in the slightest.
Claudia wanted to ask about Loretta. too, but his stern, serious expression made her hold her tongue.
Harold glanced down at the cakes on the table, then back at her. “Don’t you like them?”

Claudia shook her head. “No, I do.”
She paused for two seconds, reached for the cake, and fumbled clumsily to peel off the packaging.
Her nerves got the better of her, and she couldn’t get the wrapper open no matter how hard she tried.
Harold leaned forward, elbows resting on his knees. He took the cake from her hands, unwrapped it, and
handed it back to her.
Claudia drew in a slow, shaky breath and accepted the cake, staring down at it with a heavy/heart.
I already brushed my teeth, and I don’t even feel like eating this. But it feels like he won’t let me leave if I refuse.
She ate it slowly and cautiously, while Harold kept his eyes fixed firmly on her the entire time.
Claudia fidgeted nonstop under his stare, her skin crawling with unease.
Just then, a sharp knock echoed at the front door.
A man dressed all in black stood in the doorway holding a bag, making no move to step inside. “Mr. Cross.”
Harold stood up at last, leaving the sofa.
Claudia let out a long, quiet sigh of relief.
He stepped over and murmured a few quiet instructions to the man, then carried the bag upstairs.
Claudia froze for a moment, staring at the bag in his hand.
It was exactly the same kind of bag Harold’s people had used when sending her clothes before.
Wait a second–does he plan to stay here tonight?
All the floors above the third are empty bedrooms, completely bare with nothing inside them at all.
Where’s he going to sleep?
Does he expect us to share a room?
She swallowed the last bite of cake, sitting there frozen in shock.
He already has a fiancée.
A few days ago, when Lowell asked how her injured foot was doing, he casually threw out a question. “When are you two getting divorced?”
That was when she found out from Lowell that Harold planned to end their marriage once her troubles were sorted out, then marry Loretta right after.
Why show up here now? Isn’t he worried Loretta will misunderstand?

Claudia put the untouched second cake into the refrigerator, then pulled out a cold bottle of mineral water. She sipped it slowly, trying to calm her racing thoughts.
What am I supposed to do now?
She didn’t dare head upstairs, lingering aimlessly around the first–floor living room to kill time.
It wasn’t long before Harold appeared downstairs, wearing slippers and a short–sleeved athletic tracksuit.
Their eyes locked for a brief two seconds.
Harold said in a cold, commanding tone, “Go upstairs and get some sleep.”
Claudia nodded timidly, not daring to meet his eyes any longer, and walked upstairs.
