Chapter 926 Ice Cream
Dolores scooped Zander up into her arms. “Remember, sweetie, that man is bad news. You stay away from him from now on, okay? And next time you see your uncle, tell him to teach that guy a lesson.”
She didn’t give Carson another look, turning instead to leave with Zander.
But Carson followed and caught her by the arm. “Dora.”
Zander immediately swung a small fist toward him. “Bad guy! Let go of my aunt!”
“Get your hands off me,” Dolores said coldly, pulling her arm back as if she’d touched something dirty.
Carson stared at her, reluctance written all over his face, but he finally released his his grip.
As Dolores turned to go, she nearly bumped right into Harvey, who was standing just a few feet away.
Harvey’s eyes flickered toward Carson, his expression unreadable, before he shifted his attention back to her. Without a word, he took Zander from her arms, then reached for her hand. Holding the boy with one arm and her hand with the other, he led them away.
He didn’t so much as glance in Carson’s direction.
Carson took a couple of steps forward, but as soon as he neared Harvey’s two geese-a pair of loud, protective Embdens-they turned on him. Hissing loudly, they charged straight for his legs, pecking and twisting at his calves with a vengeance.
“Get off!” Carson yelled, trying to wave them away.
But the geese only clamped down harder, refusing to let go. Before long, Carson’s legs were covered in red marks, and he was yelping in pain.
Patrons from nearby restaurants had started to stare.
Jessica, watching from her table, saw the whole humiliating scene unfold. She also watched Dolores walk away hand in hand with Harvey.
She knew exactly what had happened.
Everyone in their circle knew Zander often trailed those two geese around town.
By now, Carson had been dragged down toward the riverbank by the aggressive birds. He stumbled, falling into the mud, and came up looking utterly pathetic-covered in dirt and scowling.
“Useless embarrassment,” Jessica muttered under her breath. She grabbed her purse and left without another look back.
Before Harvey, Dolores, and Zander had even made it back to their table, Harvey spotted his sister Henrietta trying to sneak over something clearly hidden behind her back.
“Henrietta,” he said, his tone stern,
She froze, then slowly brought her hands forward, revealing two ice cream cones “It’s not for me, I swear it’s for Dolores: She loves this flavor!”
Henrietta sidled up to Dolores and pushed one of the cones into her hand.
Dolores looked down at the cold treat, then up at Harvey with cautious eyes. “Would it be okay if I had a little?”
Zander’s eyes went round. “Uncle Harvey, can I have some too?”
Harvey sighed, running a hand through his hair. He knew this was Henrietta’s doing–using Dolores as a shield. But the hopeful look in Dolores’ eyes was hard to resist.
He set Zander down in a chair. “Fine. But don’t let Dad catch you.”
Henrietta nudged Dolores gently. “See? He listens to you. He’s not even worried about what Dad’ll say anymore.”
Dolores couldn’t help but laugh softly.
Harvey signaled to a waiter, who brought over a few spoons. The three of them ended up sharing the two cones, while Harvey stood slightly to the side, blocking the view from where Damian and the rest of the family sat.
Between licks of ice cream, Henrietta grinned. “You’ve changed, Harvey.”
Harvey shot her a look. “Keep talking and I’ll take that cone back.”
Dolores stayed quiet, simply smiling. She knew better than anyone what, Harvey used to be like-distant, reserved, always in control. Now, his eyes rarely left her when they were together.
Henrietta leaned closer to Dolores, lowering her voice. “So, are you staying in the city with Harvey tonight, or are you heading back to your place separately?”
“Separately, for sure,” Dolores whispered back, her cheeks warming. “We’re only engaged, not married yet…”
She peeked up at Harvey, who was watching them with an amused expression.
“I thought you two were talking about moving in together,” Henrietta said casually.
Dolores paused. “Moving in together… wouldn’t that be a little too soon?”
“Why? You could stay up as late as you want, watch movies, even sneak out for a drink now and then-isn’t that what you’ve always. wanted?”
