Chapter 927 Ring Shopping
My own dad,” she muttered under her breath, pressing her lips together.
Harvey started the engine
“Where are we going?” she asked./
“To look at engagement rings.”
“Isn’t everything closed by now?”
“Not where we’re going. I made an appointment.”
She stole a glance at him. “Do you… want to move in together?”
Harvey let out a dry, soft laugh. “Asking a guy if he wants to live together is pretty much a rhetorical question.”
Her cheeks flushed. Okay, fair point. What guy wouldn’t?
“The better question,” he added, the corner of his mouth lifting again, “is whether I’m taking you home tonight.”
“So…” Dolores trailed off, not daring to finish.
Never mind. She wasn’t going to ask.
“I will take you home,” he said, his tone dipping slightly. “But it’s not what I really want.”
“Well, that’s helpful,” she managed, unsure how to respond.
The first part made him sound considerate. The second part-that was clearly what he actually meant.
Harvey glanced over. “So, will you come back with me?”
She mumbled, “Back where?”
“To live together.”
“No.”
Harvey laughed openly this time and gave a small, conceding nod.
Dolores subtly touched her cheek-it was burning.
Deciding to ease up, Harvey slowed the car and pulled over along a quiet, tree-lined street.
He stepped out, and a cool night breeze swept in. Dolores tugged her shawl tighter and shrank back slightly.
Harvey walked around from the back of the car holding a pair of soft cotton slippers. He came up to her side and crouched down
“When did you get these?” she asked.
“Had them brought over while you were finishing your ice cream earlier.”
He held her ankle gently, his thumb brushing lightly over a small scrape.
