Augustus‘ voice rose uncontrollably, his face flushing a deep crimson as his expression twisted into a grimace. His eyes, cold and filled with malice, fixed on Chloe with an unforgiving glare.
Chloe was taken aback–this was the first time she had ever seen him like this.
Quickly, she spoke, trying to calm him down. “Please don’t be upset. Don’t be angry. I’ve promised, haven’t I? I’ll find a way to get Rowan out.”
Once she made her promise, Augustus‘ fury seemed to ebb slightly, though it was far from
gone.
“Remember what you’ve just said,” he warned, jabbing a finger toward her. “If I find out you’re lying, you know what the consequences will be.”
“I will keep my word,” she answered firmly, her voice calm and unwavering.
Having gotten what he wanted, Augustus didn’t stop there. “Life has been so hard for me and my wife. I’ve lost my job. As my sister, don’t you think you should show some support?”
In the past, he would never have dared to speak this way, always depending on Chloe to back him up. But now, with nothing left to lose, he no longer felt the need to hold back.
Chloe’s frustration boiled beneath the surface. With swift movements, she reached into her purse and pulled out all the cash she had. “This is all I have in cash,” she said softly, her voice gentle but resolute. “Take it for now. If it’s not enough, you can come back later.”
Augustus handed her a slip of paper, his eyes dark with an unspoken demand. “This is card
my number. Transfer two million by the end of today. If I don’t see the transfer by tonight, you know what will happen.”
She opened her mouth to protest, but the weight of his words made her swallow the objection, her silence the only response.
Meanwhile, hidden around the corner, Seraphina quietly turned and walked away.
Chloe watched her brother’s retreating figure, her fingers clenching around the paper in her hand, crumpling it into a tight ball.
It was too much.
She had always helped him–every time she’d asked for his support, she had given him what he needed. If not for her backing him, he would have long been ousted from the Kennedy Group by their elder brother.

And when public funds had been misused, it was she who had quietly swept it under the rug.
After everything, she had repaid her debt. Never had she imagined he would turn around and use their shared history as a weapon to threaten her.
Fury surged within her, but Chloe felt an overwhelming sense of helplessness. The fear that Augustus still held evidence from the past gripped her heart. If that dark secret ever surfaced in front of Oberon, it would be her undoing.
And if the powerful family in Pearlpoint were to learn of it…
A cold shiver ran down her spine, the weight of fear sinking deep into her bones.
Meanwhile, Seraphina trailed Augustus all the way to a dilapidated apartment complex. When they reached the entrance, Augustus paused, turning his head just in time to catch sight of Seraphina standing behind him, her expression unreadable, a small smile on her lips.
His eyes flashed with surprise, but that quickly morphed into seething anger. “Why are you following me?” he demanded.
“I overheard your conversation,” Seraphina replied without hesitation.
Augustus let out a harsh laugh, a cruel smile curling his lips. “So, you’re following me because you want to know our secrets?”
“Exactly,” she answered, her tone unwavering.
He scoffed, his laughter ringing with bitterness. “You’ve done nothing but cause Rowan harm, and now you think I’ll share my secrets with you? Dream on.”
Without another word, he turned and started walking away.
But Seraphina’s voice cut through the air, her words aimed at his retreating form. “She can’t save Rowan, but I can.”
Augustus‘ footsteps faltered for a brief moment, but he didn’t look back.
Seraphina watched him disappear into the distance, her gaze deep and contemplative. What had they done all those years ago? What part had she played in it all?
A gnawing feeling settled in her chest, an uneasy pull at the edges of her mind. She couldn’t shake the thought that the secret that had haunted her across two lifetimes might finally find its answer in him.
