Kieran

The day of the celebration arrived.

I sat in my office in the morning with a list of things that needed to go right. The pack would be watching. The press would be present. The Moonlight Pack delegation was coming, and the partnership announcement had to look like the work of two strong houses standing as equals, not like the slow takeover I was actually engineering.

I needed Jenna to do her job.

I picked up the phone.

“Kieran?” Jenna’s voice came through after one ring. “Kieran, oh my God, you have no idea how stressful this has been. Do you know how many people I’ve had to call? Do you know how many seating charts I have rewritten? The florist tried to switch white roses for cream and I had to physically threaten her over the phone, Kieran, I have lost three years of my life for this party-”

“Is everything ready, Jenna?”

“Of course it’s ready. I made it ready. While you and Serena were doing whatever the two of you do, I was-”

“Jenna.” I growled out.

Hearing these stories was not the reason why I picked up the phone to call?

“It’s ready. The flowers are set. The catering is confirmed. The press list has been vetted. The Moonlight delegation will arrive at six. Everything is ready.”

It was quite impressive that she had done this well. Jenna was not one I would trust to take up this project but shockingly, her had done a good job.

What was left was actually seeing it and not just hearing it.

“Good.”

“You are welcome, by the way.” I could hear the grin in

her voice.

I hung up before she could find another grievance.

I scrolled through my contacts and tapped Trevor’s name. The last time I saw Trevor was a few days ago and he had suddenly fallen off the face of the earth. Times like these, I suspected it had to do with his family, as a friend, it was my job to help him out with the little I could.

Inviting him out.

He picked up on the third ring.

“Kieran. I was just thinking about you.” He said in a loud and enthusiastic voice.

“Where have you been?”

“My pack.” He sounded tired. “My brother needed help with the territory dispute on the south border. I have been there.”

Trevor was not the alpha of the pack, he was the younger brother of the alpha and they had a great relationship, but Trevor had no desires of associating himself with the matters of the pack lest anyone thought he was planning 509verthrow his brother.

However, Markus, his brother really had no fears. His trust in Trevor was solid. And no matter how far Trevor ran away, Markus found him and brought him back home.

Trevor was blessed with the gift of gap and Markus was the sole benefactor of that gift.

“I have not heard from you.” I said.

“I know. I was going to call. How is everything? How is Serena?”

“Complicated.”

He laughed. “Of course.”

“There is a celebration tonight. The Moonlight partnership announcement. I want you there.”

“Jenna already added me to the list.”

We talked for another minute before the call came to an

end.

At four in the evening, I left the office.

I drove to the hospital to pick Serena up. I had told her I would.

Mark parked in the usual spot.

I walked through the lobby. The nurses at the front desk nodded at me.

I walked to her department.

A young nurse was at the desk outside Serena’s office. She looked up when I walked in and she immediately rose to her feet and walked towards me, stopping me from going forward to see Serena.

“Mr. Thawthorne-”

“Where is my wife?”

“Dr. Thawthorne left about forty minutes ago, sir. She left with Dr. Laskin:”

Misha again.

My jaw locked.

I walked away from her and picked up my phone, there was no text from Serena, no prior notice that she would be leaving with someone else.

By the time Mark pulled into the driveway, my heart was beating fast due to anger. I walked into the house and found the dining room light was on.

Serena was at the dining table eating.

She was not in a dress, nor was hair done. There was no makeup on her face. She was in jeans and an old t-shirt, eating dinner like the celebration was happening to other people.

I stood in the doorway already shaking from rage.

“What are you doing?”

She looked up, chewed once, slowly, swallowed.

“Eating.” She said looking around like it was not obvious.

“You came home with Misha.”

She nodded. “Yes.”

Her nonchalance to this knowing she had signed a contract made me angry. She was intentionally ignoring me. “Why did you not inform me?”

She paused for a minute and then looked at me. “I’m sorry, Kieran.”

Half-assed apology that came from nothing.

And it only made my anger boil. “It is the night of the celebration, Serena. We are due at the Alpha house in two hours and you are sitting here in a t-shirt eating pasta.”

She set her fork down before looking at me. Her face was calm. The calm I was beginning to hate.

“What do you want me to say, Kieran?”

“You signed a contract.” My voice climbed. “You agreed to be a Luna. Do you understand what tonight is?”

“I understand.”

“Then why are you sitting there?”

She suddenly rose to her feet and walked towards me

“I will go upstairs. I will get dressed. I will be at the Alpha house at six.” Her voice did not rise. “I am sorry that I left work with Misha. I am sorry that I am not yet dressed. I will fix it. Is there anything else?”

“Serena-”

“Is there anything else, Kieran?”

I did not answer.

She nodded once and just like that, she walked past me.

I was left alone standing in the dining room.

My anger had nowhere to land.

Why was she not fighting me? Why was she not throwing things?
