The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 137

Chapter 137

Kieran

Ethan’s arms were locked around my leg and the room was very, very quiet.

I looked down at him. I looked up at the room. Andrew stood near the kitchen doorway with his glass halfway to his mouth and his brow lifted in a particular expression

“Who,” Andrew said slowly, “is this child?” His face was warped into disgust.

He looked at Ethan with that face and shook his head slowly like his evening had been ruined.

Serena’s eyes cut to him. “Don’t.”

“He is so ugly though.” He said.

“He is not ugly,” she said, and her voice carried the kind of finality that closed conversations. “This is my husband’s son. With the woman he has always loved.”

pinned on me, in fact she had said it so casually that I almost did not catch it.

Andrew’s mouth closed. He looked at Ethan, then at me, then at Serena, and something moved across his face that was not entirely surprise.

From somewhere to my left, Trevor let out a sound that was entirely laughter, short and unrestrained, and then quickly became a cough when I looked at him.

Sophie stepped fully into the apartment. She smoothed the front of her dress and looked at Serena with careful eyes. “Thank you for the invitation,” she said. “I hope I’m not overstepping.”

She turned to me but I only stared back at her.

I could not believe that Serena had invited her to the dinner. What was she trying to accomplish? I grabbed Serena’s arm.

She let me pull her down the hallway without argument, which told me she had been expecting this. I walked her past the kitchen, past the second door, to the narrow space near the linen closet where the noise of the room faded to something manageable.

I let her go.

“What are you doing?” My voice was low.

Serena looked up at me with a calm, patient expression. “You know them,” she said. “Why are you reacting like this?”

“This is the surprise,” I said. “This is what you’ve been planning?”

“I brought them here because there’s no reason for you to keep sneaking around to see them.” She said it in a very simple way. Her eyes pinned on me and innocence clouding them. “They’re standing right here. You won’t be attracting your grandfather’s attention anymore.” She paused. “Ethan is my godson now. You can openly be a father to him. Nobody has to call you anything.”

The blood drained from my face slowly, what was she up to? Just last night she was acting all dismissive and distant and suddenly she cared about me?.

“Do you know what you’re doing?” I asked.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.” She tilted her head with

a smile on her face. “Stop reacting like it’s such a catastrophe that you’re Ethan’s father. If anyone asks, in future, why the boy calls you that, just say I’m his godmother. Blame it on me. I’ll take it.”

“I never wanted to give Ethan a public status.” My voice came out rough. “I never wanted any of this out in the open. I made that choice deliberately, Serena, and you’ve just-”

“I bought the apartment upstairs,” she suddenly said, interrupting me.

I stopped.

She held my gaze for a brief second.

“I bought it for Sophie.” Her voice was quiet.

My jaw dropped. She had made such large purchase using my cards because the people about to benefit were Ethan and Sophie.

“So she and Ethan can be close. So you don’t have to drive across the city at midnight anymore when she calls. They’re a floor up. You can see them whenever you want

dropped further. “And if anyone finds out, if anyone asks, if it ever becomes a problem, put it on me. I’ll be the bad

guy.

I looked at her face.

She looked back at mine.

I pushed her away. Not hard. But enough that she took a step back. “You’re very generous,” I said.

Serena smiled at me, a small, bright, clean and completely hollow.

I turned and walked back to the room.

Sophie was standing near the window with Ethan at her side and her hands clasped in front of her. I crossed toward her, already forming the sentence in my head that would end the evening politely, that would move Sophie and Ethan out the door and put this whole arrangement back in the box where I’d kept it.

“There’s really no need-”

“Kigran.”

Serena’s voice came from directly behind me. She had followed me back faster than I expected.

“You cannot tell me who I invite into my own home,” she said pleasantly. “I’m celebrating my promotion. I’m entitled to have whoever I choose at my own table.”

I turned to face her.

She was already looking at me with that composed, almost cheerful expression, the one I had no way into.

“Celebrating,” I said.

“Celebrating,” she confirmed.

Trevor appeared at my elbow with a glass in his hand and the expression of a man who was enjoying himself thoroughly. “Are you two actually married? Because this is a genuinely confusing dynamic.”

Andrew, who had apparently recovered from Ethan’s entrance and taken up a position near the drinks, looked between us. “Genuinely,” he said. “What exactly are we working with here?”

“Kieran and Sophie are the real family,” Trevor said,

gesturing loosely. “Ethan is Kieran’s firstborn. Sophie is his first love. That’s the situation.”

Andrew turned this over. “Oh,” he said. “Really.”
