Serena

I took the papers and I didn’t let him see me thinking about it.

My hand stayed steady. My face stayed still. I tucked the documents under my arm and looked at him without giving anything away, while the current of suspicion running through my chest kept running.

He watched me tuck them away.

“Now that you have them,” he said, “what happens?”

“Are you expecting something in return?”

He looked at me. “Your love. Your loyalty to this marriage. That’s all I want.”

I let out a dry laugh. “Sure. We’ll see.” I set the papers on the edge of the desk. “As long as you respect my career and keep yourself out of my professional life, we’ll figure the rest out.”

“You’ve been at odds with me over those documents since you got back,” he said. “They’re in your hands now. What do you have to say?”

“That it doesn’t matter.” I kept my voice even. “I know what kind of man you are, Kieran. Today I have these. Tomorrow you’ll find something else, another string to pull, another lever to use against my family.” I looked at him. “That’s just you.”

He shook his head. “That’s not true.”

I shrugged.

We moved into the living room. He sat across from me and after a moment he asked, “Have we reached an agreement about this marriage?”

“Yes,” I said. “We’ll respect each other. Both of us.”

He looked at me with his eyes going easy, with his jaw going loose and the tension draining out of his shoulders.

He wanted to sleep with me.

My stomach turned.

“If that’s the case,” he said, with his voice dropping low, “shouldn’t we celebrate? Getting back on the same page.” He tilted his head toward the hallway. “Together.”

I opened my mouth. His phone rang.

Sophie’s name sat on the screen. He picked it up and his thumb moved immediately toward the end call button.

The phone rang again before he pressed it.

I reached across and lifted it out of his hand.

“Sophie is calling,” I said. “Why are you acting like that?”

“I told you I’d keep her out of our—”

“I don’t want Sophie and her son out of our lives.” I held the phone out to him. “That child is yours. If I don’t treat him like he belongs in this family, what does that say about me?” I pressed the phone into his palm. “Answer it.”

He looked at me for a beat. Then he answered and put it on speaker.

I kept my face still while he held the phone between us.

I heard the strain in Sophie’s voice within her first three words. Ethan had a fever. She drank at dinner and

couldn’t drive. She needed someone to come take them to

the hospital. Her voice climbed with each sentence.

Before Kieran could say anything, I did.

“Go,” I told him. “He may have eaten something bad at dinner. You need to make sure he’s okay.”

“I don’t want to go.”

I looked at him. “What kind of father refuses to go when his son needs him?”

He paused. His eyes moved across my face. “Come with

me.”

The answer was no, and jealousy was only part of it. I wanted him to go. I wanted him to spend the evening with Sophie and Ethan, wanted to give him that space so I could have mine.

I also didn’t want to be near him. I didn’t care to spend the rest of the night watching the two of them move through a hospital together. And I needed tonight not to end where he was steering it.

“I’m not going,” I said.

“I know you’re not happy about this call.” He held my eyes. “But the child is innocent. He has nothing to do with what’s between us.”

“Did I say one word about blaming the child?” I looked at him. “You didn’t even want to go. I had to push you toward your own son. And now you’re standing here suggesting I’m the one with resentment?”

“I’m not saying that.” He slightly lifted his hands. “Sometimes we start looking badly at things without even realizing we are.”

“I’m not looking badly at anything.” I held his gaze. “Ethan is a child. He didn’t choose any of this and I don’t blame him for one second.” I stood. “I’m not angry about you going tonight. He’s sick and he needs his father. Go.”

He held his eyes on my face for a long moment.

“Since when are you and Sophie friends?”

I picked up my glass from the table. “This isn’t the time for this conversation.”

“You invited her to your dinner. You’re sending me to her at midnight. I want to know when this started.”

“Why does it bother you?” I tilted my head. “Why are you so defensive about it?”

“I’m not defensive.”

“You are.” I set the glass down. “Your shoulders are up and your jaw is set and your eyes went sharp the second I mentioned her name. If your conscience was clear, you wouldn’t be interrogating me about my relationship with your son’s mother.”

He glared at me.

His phone rang again before he could speak. Sophie’s name lit the screen a second time.

I reached over and answered it before he could react.

“Kieran’s on his way,” I said. “He’ll take you both to the hospital. Don’t worry your head.”
