The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 143

Chapter 143

Serena

The apartment was quiet by the time I settled in.

I sat with my back against the headboard and opened the files Andrew had pulled from Kieran’s laptop, folder by folder, document by document. He had told me there was no trace. Nothing Kieran would ever find. Looking at the volume of what Andrew had copied across, I believed him. I carefully went through each file, moving from folder to folder, reading what I needed to read.

I was already three folders deep when I heard the front

door.

I moved instantly closing the app and sliding my phone under my pillow. I quickly laid down and shut my eyes before his footsteps reached the bedroom door.

I slowed my breathing and kept it even so he couldn’t tell that I was awakes His footsteps moved across the room as usual when he returned from somewhere, he would take his bath. Even though he was busy around the room, I didn’t open my eyes.

I woke up in the morning to a text message from Sophie.

“Can we meet?” She asked attached with the address. Luckily, it was close to the hospital. I ignored Kieran got dressed and went over to meet her.

She was already at a corner table when I arrived, with a cup held between her palms. She looked up at me when I walked in with a sad smile on her lips.

“Why did you want to meet?” I went straight to the point, taking a seat.

“I do not want the apartment.”

I sat down. “Why?”

“I don’t want to be indebted to you.” Her voice was even, each word placed with care. “Money has never mattered to me. What I care about is Kieran. His health. His happiness. His peace of mind.” She held my gaze across the table. “What Kieran and I have is real love. Not something you can manufacture. I don’t think you’d understand it, you and Kieran don’t have that between you. But he and I do. And at the end of everything, that’s

the only thing that matters.”

I looked at her face. Her chin was lifted and her hands were still around her cup.

“Fine,” I said. “You can take gifts from Kieran but cannot take from me?”

“I can’t accept from you.” She shook her head. “I barely take from Kieran as it is. He insists, I don’t ask. But I won’t take from you.” She looked at me with her eyes steady. “I’m not like you, Serena. I don’t need money to stay beside someone. That’s not why I’m with Kieran, he genuinely cares about me.”

She set her cup down and looked at her hands. She didn’t say the part she was leaving unsaid. She didn’t need to.

I reached forward, picked up the deed, folded it, and put it in my bag.

“No problem,” I said. “Since you don’t want it.”

She smiled. I smiled back.

When she left, I sat with my coffee and turned the

conversation over in my head.

Sophie placed every word where she wanted it. I didn’t know what this woman was up to but she was definitely up to something. She already had Kieran’s heart, there was nothing more she needed but to help me push this divorce forward.

Why then was she playing this game?

I needed to think of another approach, now that she was acting this way, I couldn’t even bet for sure she would join me in my mission.

I checked the time and rose to my feet. I still had a few minutes before work. I made my way out of the cafe.

“Serena.”

I turned around and saw Jenna. She was dressed beautifully, simple and elegant. Her eyebrows lifted and her mouth broke into a smile. “It’s been ages.”

“You were at the dinner a few days ago.” I reminded her.

spending real time with you. Come to the mall with me one hour. I need to pick up a few things and I want to actually talk.”

“I have work.” I pointed to the direction of the hospital.

“One hour.” She looked at me. “That’s all I’m asking.”

I thought for a second. “Fine,” I said. “One hour.”

We moved through the mall together, talking in low voices with nothing to perform for each other, just the natural conversation between two friends who liked being around each other. Twenty minutes in, we had just turned a corner when I stopped walking.

Aina whimpered in me. What was left of her heart shattering.

In front of me was Kieran.

Kieran stood at a rack in the children’s section with a box in each hand, turning them over, reading the labels. Ethan sat on the floor nearby. He looked up at the boxes Kieran held, pointing at one. Sophie stood at Kieran’s shoulder with her palm pressed flat against his back.

They looked like a picture perfect family.

I stood there and my hands stayed loose at my sides and nothing inside me moved anymore.

What I felt was simpler than grief and colder than anger. This was not the first or the second or even the third disrespect I had received from him. However, he had just told me he would keep them away.

I never expected he would actually do it, I thought at most he would tell me before he met them. But it was next to impossible for a leopard to lose its spots.

I fetched my phone and took a quick picture of the scene.

Jenna was a few steps behind me, talking to someone near a window display. She came up beside me and went still.

Her jaw set. Her shoulders pulled back and squared.

“Fuck! Isn’t that…..”

I nodded. “Yes, that is a happy family.”

“I’m going over there.” She said already walking there.

I put my hand on her arm, stopping her. “Don’t.”

“Serena-”

“We buy what we came to buy and we leave.” I kept my grip. “There’s no point.”

She stood rigid beside me. Then she pulled in a breath looked away from the toy rack, and started walking.

“I don’t understand why you invited her to the dinner,” she said as we moved through the aisle. “I don’t understand why you made Ethan your godson. Any of it.”

I kept my eyes forward.

“Because I’ve been fighting this battle for a long time,” I said, “and the only person who gets hurt is me. Is Kieran suffering? No. Is Sophie suffering? No.” I shook my head. “Only me. So I stopped. Sophie and her son are going to be part of my marriage for as long as this marriage exists. I’ve accepted that.”
