The Alpha house filled quickly.
Cameras lined the far wall. Pack members filled every seat and pressed three deep along the sides, and the room hummed with low voices that cut off the moment Serena and
I walked in together, hand in hand to portray the illusion of our oerfect marriage.
Cora lurched forward in my chest.
She was a luna who had given up her title. She walked in
beside me with her back straight and her chin up. She moved
and the room turned toward her.
I stood beside her and had not said a single word assembling my thoughts and the words I had planned for the reporters.
I stepped towards the microphone but she was faster, grabbing the mic head with a smile on her face.
“Thank you for coming,” she said. Her voice carried clean

across the room. She looked directly into the nearest camera.
“My husband and I are here today because we believe the
people of this territory deserve to hear the truth from us
directly.” She glanced at me warmly for a brief moment
before her eyes found the reporters again.
“Kieran is not cheating on me. He has not been cheating
on me. What you saw in that photograph was a moment
taken out of context by someone who does not have our best
interests at heart.” She paused. “We are happy. Our marriage
is something we have both invested in and fought for. I
would not be standing here if I had any doubt about the man
beside me.”
She went on.
She spoke about the early years how we met, how the pack received the marriage, how in love the two of us were. She spoke about what she was building with me and why she was still building it. She was warm and graceful and I watched
her deliver three minutes of our lives to a room full of
cameras.
When she finished, a reporter raised his hand.
“If the Alpha is not the father of the other woman’s child,” he 2/9

said, “then who is the father of your child? There have been
circulating reports-”
I stepped forward before she could answer.
“My wife just stood in front of this entire room and told you
about our marriage,” I said. “She told you we are committed
to each other. She told you we are still building something.” I
held the reporter’s eyes. “What more do you need?”
The reporter lowered his hand and with no more questions, the press conference ended.
We walked out together. I put my hand at the small of her
back and she let it sit there for the length of the corridor.
The second we were out of sight of any of try reporters, she
moved quickly, evading my touch..
“I’m going to the Cartridge house,” she said. “Misha is taking me to see Elan. I’ll be home late.”
She walked away before I could answer.
I stood at the entrance of the Alpha house and watched
her cross the courtyard. Cora pressed after her in my chest, pushing toward the bond, straining against me. I knew Aina 3/9

could feel how desperate Cora wanted to connect with her,
but she never looked back.
I turned to find my grandfather already heading back inside.
“Seeing as the rumors are addressed,” I said, “I’ll be heading
back.”
“Kieran.”
I turned.
My mother stood with her hands folded in front of her and
her eyes on my face.
“Look at her,” she said quietly. “Think about what you just
watched her do in there.”
“Mother-”
“She stood up in front of cameras and defended a marriage
that is hurting her.” She held my gaze. “And she is hurting because of you. Because you kept Sophie close and did all the things you never once did for Serena for Sophie.” She paused. “She watched you give another woman everything you never gave her. Of course this is sh would hate you and 4/9

yet, you made her defend the same marriage that had
stripped her of every joy.”
My heart cracked like an egg, staring at her speechless.
“Let one of them go,” she said. “Make a choice and commit to it. If you keep holding onto both, you will lose them both and
one of those losses will be the one that finishes you.”
I shook my head. “I have no attachment to Sophie beyond Ethan. Serena is my wife. She’s not going anywhere.”
My mother looked at me for a long moment. Then she stepped aside.
I drove home slowly.
My mother’s words sat in my chest, maybe she was right about the specifics. There had been things I did for Sophie that I never did for Serena but these were things that
happened without thought.
Perhaps if I start treating her better and getting her gifts, she will be able to forgive me.
I called Mark.

“Find the person who bought Serena’s jewelry,” I said. “The
pieces she sold. I want to know who has them.”
“Already on it, sir.”
I pulled up outside the building.
Sophie stood near the entrance with her hands pressed
together in front of her and her shoulders drawn forward.
“Kieran.” She crossed to me. “I’m sorry. I keep saying it but I mean it, everything that’s happened, the disruption, the
articles I’m the reason for all of it. If I weren’t afraid of what
your grandfather would do, I would have told you to tell Serena the truth from the beginning. Any piece of it.”
“You don’t need to apologize,” I said.
“I do.” Her voice was quiet.
I looked at the building behind her. This was where Serena and I lived. The same building she had given to her then.
“You need to leave this building,” I said. “By morning. I’ll find you and Ethan a permanent house, somewhere that’s yours.

But you can’t stay here.”
She held my eyes for a moment. Then she nodded.
“If that’s what you want.” She said, tears pouring down her
eyes.
I turned to go.
“Kieran.”
I stopped.
“I wasn’t going to show you this.” Her voice dropped. “But I
can’t keep watching her lie to you. I captured this because I
didn’t know what else to do with it.”
She held her phone out.
The photograph on the screen showed Serena outside a
building with a man’s arms around her shoulders. Their faces
close together. One could not see their facial expression
