Serena’s words were unable to escape from my head. The way she acted, the things she said, I could not wrap my head around what it meant.
It seemed like she had other things planned but truly one could not even begin to grasp an understanding of her
words or her actions.
First, I needed to see Sophie. Serena had doubled down. on her decision to give this marriage a second chance and to stop asking do a divorce for now, she was finally seeing the light. I had to do my part and inform Sophie about this.
Slowly ease her and Ethan out of my life. Serena was carrying my child, I needed to be present for her.
I walked into the room Sophie was kept in, she sat alone with a book in her lap and looked up when I came through the door.
“Kieran, you’re here!” She kept the book aside a smiled

at me. “How did it go at the school?”
“It went well and Ethan is fine,” I said, taking the chair
at her bedside. “I spoke to the principal and met the other boy’s father. It’s settled. He won’t be facing any consequences.”
Sophie briefly closed her eyes and exhaled. “Thank you,” she said. “I keep saying it. I know it doesn’t cover any of
this.”
“Don’t,” I said. “It’s done.”
She nodded. Then she pressed her lips together and didn’t speak for a moment.
“I want you to know,” she said, “that none of this is your fault.” She looked at the window. “If your grandfather hadn’t forced me out, if he hadn’t made clear there was no place for me in your life, things would’ve been different between us. I would’ve stayed with you.” She paused. “He made sure I didn’t, and so I went, and then all of this came with me.” She gestured at the room, at herself. “I keep bringing trouble into your marriage without meaning to. I’m sorry for that.”

I listened to her and then slowly nodded my head. “Sophie,” I said. “I need to ask you something.”
She looked at me.
“Did you know I had a half-brother?”
I could not believe that Sophie was the kind of a person who would do such a thing. She wasn’t a schemer, she wasn’t a bad person, she was kind and thoughtful.
She turned her head to face me more fully. “A half-brother,” she said.
“Yes.”
“Kieran.” She slowly shook her head. “I didn’t know you had a half-brother. I didn’t know anyone like that existed.” She looked at me. “Who told you that? Where is this coming from?”
Her hands rested flat and open on the blanket.
She looked completely innocent, I was sure she definitely was not part of what had killed Benjamin, if she said she wasn’t responsible, I believed her. Sophie had saved 378

life before, what reason would she have to kill Benjamin when she did not even know him?
“Forget I asked,” I said.
“Kieran.” She leaned forward. “If something is happening in your family, you don’t have to carry it alone. You know that.”
“It’s being handled,” I said. “It doesn’t involve you.”
She pressed her lips into a thin line and then looked at me for a minute. Her lips parted slightly, but before she could get a word out, I stood up.
“Serena and I are trying again,” I said. “Starting over. I need to take that seriously and that means I can’t keep being your first call for everything.”
Her eyes widened minimally.
“I’m going to ask Mark to be your point of contact going forward,” I said. “If Ethan needs something, if you need something, you go through him. He’ll handle it. You won’t be left without support.” I held her gaze. “But you can’t call my number anymore. No texts. If something j59

urgent, Mark is who you reach.”
The room was quiet and my eyes stayed on her waiting for whatever reaction she would have.
“Kieran,” she said.
“I mean it,” I said.
Her mouth opened, then she closed it again.
“I’m not abandoning you,” I said. “But the direct line has to close. For Serena. For the marriage.” I looked at her face. “You’ll be fine, Sophie. You have always been fine.”
“Kieran,” she said again.
I walked out.
I drove back to work trying to not think about Serena’s actions today. I could not tell what she was thinking anymore, perhaps one of her friends would know.
I settled in my chair and called Trevor.
He picked up on the second ring. “Kieran.”

“I need to tell you something,” I said.
“Tell me.”
“Serena came home today,” I said. “Or she’s coming tonight. I went to see her at work and-” I stopped. “She was cooperative, Trevor. She offered to go apologize to Sophie herself. She said she was tired of fighting and she wanted to try again. She said she’d be home tonight and I could come pick her up.”
The call was quiet. I brought the phone to my eyes but the call was still connected, so why was he silent?
A laugh rang through into my ears.
“It’s not funny,” I said.
“It’s a little funny,” he said. “Kieran, listen to me. She’s not coming back to you. Not like you think she is.”
