“Stop bringing Sophie into this,” he said. “I did not cheat on
you.”
Once again he said the same words expecting me to believe him. I couldn’t help and only shook my head staring at him, did he think I was a fool or did he think I was born yesterday?
“You didn’t sleep with her,” I said. “Fine. Let’s say that’s true.
But you chose her. You chose her over and over and over, and
I stood there and watched it happen every time.” I looked
at him. “You spent a whole month under her roof, Kieran. A
month. You did things for Sophie that you never once thought
to do for me. I begged you, I actually begged you, to stay. To
look at me. To see me. And you left anyway.” I held his gaze.
“You fought your grandfather for Sophie. You fought your
mother. You fought everyone in your family for Sophie. Has
anyone ever fought anyone for me?”
I had lived in this marriage for years, but never did he fight for me the way he had fought for her. He loved her so loudly
and even to my face it was loud.

He said nothing but the rage that had been crystal clear softened just minimally as if my words had touched a place in his chest his heart used to be.
“So tell me,” I said. “Do you honestly believe that I would ever, stand in front of you and believe you didn’t sleep with her?”
A man who could do the things hebhad done, did he believe I would think that he did not sleep with her? After he did everything else, why would sex be the last thing?
Kieran was a man who loved sex more than anything else, he was always in the mood to have sex but he had spent one month with Sophie, and I couldn’t be surprised if she got
pregnant do him.
The only thing he wanted from me was an actual name. I
was his life I was legal but Sophie was not and if he wanted a
woman that would care for him, they could but that’s not he
wanted he wanted to have a child with me.”
“I did not sleep with Sophie.” His jaw was tight. “I promise your that.” He kept on with the atrocious lie expecting Wei would
believe him.
I looked at him. “But you love her?” I asked. 2/6

He held my gaze for a moment too long, it appeared that he
was thinking about it, perhaps wondering if he he should tell
the truth or not.
“I used to,” he said.
A smile threatened to spread across my face.
This was not news, of course he cared for her and this was
not a new information. However, despite everything, Aina still
whimpered.
Knowing a thing and hearing it said plainly, in someone’s
voice, in a quiet room those are different things. He used to
love Sophie. Said it in the past tense like a door closed. Like the subject was settled.
“Sophie is in the past,” he said. “She belongs there and I’m keeping her there. We agreed to move forward. You said
second chances. We shook hands on this.”
“And if you bring up Andrew,” I said, “I’ll bring up Sophie.
Every time. For as long as you want this to go on.”
He stared at me.

“I’ve accepted something about this marriage,” I said. “I’ve
accepted that I’m the other woman in it. Sophie was here before me and she will always be the one who left a mark.
I’ve made my peace with that. I don’t want more. The only
thing I want is a divorce, and since you won’t give it to me, I’ll
sit in this marriage and watch you choose her until one of us
runs out of time.”
“That’s not what this is,” he said. “You’re not the
“You hugged Andrew outside this building,” he said. “You
brought him into our home. You gave him access to my
personal files.” He looked at me. “Is that what your innocence
looks like?”
Andrew.
I thought about Andrew and his absolute confidence — in and
out without a trace, Kieran would never find the thread, trust
I should not have believed him and instead I should’ve known
Kieran was such a hard man to deal with. He was surely
going to find out one way or another.

“You’re crossing a line,” Kieran said. His voice came down flat. “The things you’re doing with Andrew, going to his apartment, that is not what a doctor does for a patient and you know it. It was never that. And I don’t trust you around him. I don’t trust you around anyone anymore.”
I smiled. “You’re right,” I said. “You can’t trust me around Andrew. But then, you’re not supposed to. Since you started this, I’ll finish it for you. And if you won’t grant me a divorce, I’ll bring him home. I’ll sleep with him in your house while you
watch.”
I walked to the bedroom.
