Chapter 170

Aina ruffled within me, faced with such a domineering
energy from the mate that had betrayed her time and again,
she shifted away, terrified of Cora.
Terrified of what the man she loved had become.
She was the only scared one here. I stared straight into his eyes as though I was egging him on.
His eyes were red and that alone backed up his threat. Just like he did before, he was going to force me into submission. I was no longer a wife to him. Well, I hadn’t been his wife in a long time.
I was the woman who he had married solely for the sake of the public. I needed to look a certain way, dress a certain way and talk to the people he needed me to talk to. Nothing
else mattered to him other than the public.
“Come,” he said.
He took my hand, intertwined our fingers, and led me into the

main room. I followed him like an obedient dog knowing if I
choose not to, he would find a way to get me there..
He brought me to a couple near the far side of the floor. A
man with broad shoulders and an easy smile, beside him, a
woman in a green dress with pearls at her throat, elegant and still, her eyes moving over everything in the room without landing on any of it.
The two of them looked beautiful together but knowing Kieran, he certainly did not bring me to appreciate the
beauty of a man and his wife.
“James and Michelle,” Kieran said. “Alpha and luna of
Wolfstoone pack.” His palm pressed briefly to my waist. “I
think you and Michelle will find you have things in common.
Eye-opening things.”
James took my hand and then smiled at me. “Nice to officially meet you, Luna.” That title was wrong but I smiled regardless.
“Don’t worry, you women will have fun while we get some
drinks.” James said and then turned to Kieran. Without
another word, they walked away.
I looked at the woman across from me, she was very

beautiful and was dressed in a black classy dress that blends
in but also stood out.
But what had he meant by eye opening?
“You came in with Misha Laskin,” Michelle said. She spoke without hurry, each word placed.
“He’s my direct supervisor,” I said. “We work at the same hospital.”
Her brows lifted. “You work?”
“I’m a doctor,” I said.
“Wow!” She looked genuinely surprised as though this was an earth shattering discovery. “Why are you doing it?”
I shrugged. “I like doing it.”
“Hmm.” She looked across the room.
I followed her gaze.
James and Kieran were with a third man now, three of them
in a cluster, and between them stood two women, laughing

easily, leaning toward the men.
Kieran caught my eyes from across the room while he talked
and then looked back at the group.
“Are you worried?” Michelle asked.
I steered my gaze back to her. “About what?”
“About the women with your husband.”
I started to say there was no point worrying, that I had stopped expecting anything from him, that the damage between us had been done in ways that made this look small. But Michelle spoke first.
“My husband has more than one,” she said. “He has so many I can no longer count and I have forgotten for how long.”
My jaw almost dropped, staring at her weirdly.
“Each time he visits one of them, he comes back home with something. Jewelry, usually. A bracelet, earrings. He’s very
generous about it.” The corners of her mouth moved. Her
eyes didn’t. “He knows I know. That’s the arrangement and the jewelry is almost like an apology.”

“And that doesn’t bother you?” I asked.
She slowly tilted her head at me. “What would bother
accomplish?” she said. “He’s an alpha. They have needs that exist regardless of what we want from them. They’re not built for what women are told to expect from a husband.” She reached for her drink. “The mate bond holds as long as the
love holds. When the love fades, the bond is only a habit. My husband stopped loving me some time ago.” A pause. “I know
that. I’ve made my peace with it.”
“Then why stay?” I asked.
“We run a pack,” she said. “Any fracture in the alpha family sends a signal to every pack watching us. A divorce says we’re weak. It says we can’t hold our own house together. I won’t give anyone that opening.” She set her drink down. “Many women here have reached the same place. It becomes an agreement instead of a marriage. Its a very functional agreement.” She met my eyes. “You learn not to fight what you can’t change. And some of the women get to
have their fun as well.”
I looked around the room.

All these women. All these couples standing together were
they all performing?
I took in a deep breath. It was clear as day that Kieran had
introduced me to this woman deliberately. This was what he
meant by eye opening.
He wanted me to see that there were so many people like
come to accept mine.
“I need a divorce,” I blurted out.
Michelle looked at me with something between pity and
confusion.
“You’ll find-”
“I need a divorce,” I said again, and stood. “Not an
arrangement. Not a peace I’ve made. A divorce.”
I turned to leave, suddenly feeling like the space was a
bit too tight. The dress seemed to have been a bad idea. I
couldn’t take it anymore.

My eyes landed on a particular face. A face I never expected to find here. She was dressed in a pale pink short dress and her make up was different from what she usually wore. It was almost as if she had no make up on but knowing her, she had a lot on.
Next to Sophie stood Fiona. They were both smiling at me. Behind me was Michelle and the message Kieran had intended for me to get.
The agreement between all these alphas and their wives.
It almost felt as though I was surrounded by the reality I have refused to accept. This would never be my life.
A woman dressed in a red dress stepped forward and took a spot beside Fiona and Sophie. Her hair was curly and her cleavage was quite loud.
“Hello Michelle, lovely to see you.” The girl suddenly said.
I glanced behind me and Michelle was already on her feet glaring at this girl.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.

The woman smiled at her. She looked at Michelle with her
face level and her hands at her sides.
“James invited me,” she said. “So I came, you see, he doesn’t
like going out knowing I wouldn’t be there to accompany him,
so he invites me everywhere. Even when he goes to see his
dead mother.”
Michelle moved with the speed of light and in no time, this woman’s hair was in between her fingers as she pulled.
Everything happened so suddenly. The woman started
yelling and shouting, trying to push Michelle away.
