Chapter 18

Trevor wasn’t done.
“Sophie knows you’re married.” He set his glass down. “She’s always known. And every move she’s made since coming back has been designed to wedge herself between you and your wife.”
I shot him a look. “Watch your mouth.’
“I’m not speaking ill of her.” He held up a hand. “I’m telling you what’s in front of your face. She calls
at midnight, you go running. She cries, you drop everything.” He tapped the rim of his glass. “That’s not a coincidence. That’s a plan.”
I fished a cigarette from my pocket and lit it, letting the flame linger before I snapped the lighter shut.
“I owe her,” I said. “She saved me. She still has the scars
to remember that night. The scar runs from her shoulder to her collarbone. She nearly died for me, and what did sheget? My grandfather shipped her off. And sh had to07

“Her life was destroyed because she loved me.”
Trevor was quiet for a moment. His sharp countenance had fallen and what resides on his expression was unreadable.
But he continued looking at me with his glass in his hand, leaned back against the booth with a smirk on his face.
“You couldn’t be together because you weren’t mates,” he said. “Your grandfather knew that. The Moon Goddess didn’t bind you.”
“This isn’t about the bond.” I cut him off. “What Sophie and I have goes beyond that. She saved my life. That kind of debt is hard to understand, it’s not just a basic bond.”
Trevor hard his eyes on me looking like he was actually paying attention to what I was saying. Perhaps he understood me?
“Do you still have feelings for her?”
He did not understand me.

with him.
I could feel it.
“This has nothing to do with feelings.” I kept my voice level trying to explain. “I have a responsibility to her.
That’s it.”
“It’s not your responsibility. She’s a grown woman, Kieran. She left an abusive marriage, she relocated, she’s raising her son. She’s not helpless.”
“Her life was ruined—”.
“And you’re letting her ruin yours.” He didn’t raise his voice. “Every time you get close to fixing things with Serena, Sophie pulls you back. She is being strategic.”
“She’s being cautious.” I ground the cigarette out. “She doesn’t want anyone knowing about Ethan or the abuse. She’s terrified that if Serena finds out, the whole world
will know.”
Trevor scoffed. “How amazing.”
“Sophie is my responsibility.”

He turned his eyes away from me, bringing his glass to his mouth.
Perhaps he had decided to end this conversation.
“What did Serena ever do to you?”
I frowned. “What?”
“You feel guilty about Sophie. You feel responsible. And whether you’ll admit it or not, you have feelings for her.” He leaned in. “So where does your wife fit? Is she just being thrown away while you play hero?”
“Serena did nothing wrong.”
“Then tell her what’s happening. Sit your wife down and explain. She’s not the type to go spreading someone’s business. You know that.”
“It’s not my story to tell.”
As for Serena, why couldn’t she trust me? Had I ever given her a reason not to? The years we had spent together was not enough to convince her who I was?

“So you won’t divorce her. You won’t explain. You won’t let her divorce you.” He shook his head. “Serena must be on the brink of losing her mind.”
My heart constricted for a brief moment.
The image of Serena attempting to jerk me off just to keep me at home flashed in my mind. I would’ve stayed, if she had gone any longer, my rationality would be thrown out the window.
Serena wasn’t on the brink of losing her mind.
I pushed it down.
“She wanted to go back to work,” I said. “I gave her that. She’ll have her routine. Nobody’s losing their mind.”
Trevor stared at me.
“You’re banking on her love for you.”
“You’re making this more complicated than it needs to be.” I reached for my jacket. “Serena loves me. She has since we were kids. It’s simple.”

His phone buzzed.
Trevor glanced at the screen, rolled his eyes, and answered. He put it on speaker.
Jenna’s voice cut through the bar noise.
“Trevor, is my brother with you?”
Trevor nodded, glancing at me. “He’s here.”
“Tell him to come home. Serena’s sick.”
I stood.
Trevor looked up. “You’re just leaving?”
“Yes.”
He tossed bills on the table and grabbed his keys. “I’ll
drive.”
The rain had thinned to a drizzle by the time we pulled into the driveway.

“Alpha Thawthorne.” He shook my hand. “Dr. Mercer. Your sister called me.”
“How is she?”
“Exhausted. Dehydrated. High fever and dangerously low blood pressure.” He paused. “If the fever doesn’t break by morning, bring her to the hospital.”
“What caused it?”
He gave me a look. “Stress. Sustained, prolonged stress. He buttoned his coat. “The body can only take so much before it shuts down.”
He left.
I took the stairs two at a time, Cora surging forward with
every step.
The bedroom door was open.
Serena lay on the bed, still in the clothes she’d been wearing earlier. Her brows were pinched even in sleep, like she was fighting something in her dreams. Her skin had gone pale, almost translucent, and her lips were
