My phone vibrated next to me. I checked the time and it was six in the morning.
I exhaled before sliding to answer the call.
“Kieran..” her voice was broken, and sounded small and
scared. “Your sister was here, she came and she hit me and insulted me and destroyed the house.”
What?
“What did you just say?”
She repeated it again. “Your sister came over a few hours ago.”
“Where are you now?” I asked her urgently.
“I’m at the hospital, can you please come over?”
I hung up and then searched my contact for Jenna’s number and when I found it, I immediately dial. 11:16

She picked up on the second ring.
“Explain.” I growled out.
“You’re going to have to be more specific.” Her tone was flat.
“Sophie is in the hospital.” I barked out in rage.
She scoffed loudly, enough for me to hear. “Good for her.”
I pressed my thumb and forefinger against the bridge of my nose. “Did Serena tell you to do this?”
Jenna laughed. Short, sharp, no warmth. “Serena isn’t that petty.”
I didn’t believe her.
Jenna was Serena’s henchman.
She had followed Serena since they were teenagers. If Serena pointed in a direction, Jenna ran. That was their dynamic. It had always been their dynamic. Serena was the mind and Jenna was the muscle, and there wasn’t a single scenario where Jenna would’ve gone to Sophie’s :16

house unprompted.
This had Serena’s fingerprints all over it.
I gathered my things and then rushed out to the hotel.
In the car, my head drifted over to Serena. I had left her only because the doctor confirmed she was stable, he bandaged her up and then confirmed she just needed rest. Only then did I leave, and not for Sophie.
I had pack business that couldn’t wait, things I’d been putting off since cutting the trip short. I’d handled what needed handling and come back before morning.
And in that window, Serena had sent Jenna to beat up Sophie.
“Apologize to her,” I said into my phone.
“Excuse me?”
“Go to the hospital. Apologize to Sophie.”
The line went quiet for three seconds.

apologize to Serena.”
There it was.
“She sent you.” My voice was calm but Cora was pacing, restless. “She told you exactly what to do and you did it. And now you’re bargaining on her behalf.”
“You’re delusional.” She argued.
“If you won’t apologize, then leave. I don’t want to see your face.”
“Leave?” Jenna’s voice pitched higher. “Leave and go
where?”
“I don’t care. Out of the territory. Out of the country. Pick
one.”
I could almost hear her rolling her eyes.
“If you send me away,” Jenna said, her voice low, “I will tell the entire pack about your affair. Every single member. I’ll tell them that their Alpha had a mate bond and it still wasn’t enough to keep him from crawling into another woman’s bed.”

My jaw locked. She wouldn’t dare.
“If Serena and I end up divorced,” I said, “it will be your fault.”
I hung up.
The car arrived at the hospital and I quickly made way towards the room where Sophie was after taking
directions from the nurse.
I pushed the door open the second I found the door,
Sophie was sitting up against the pillows, there were no bruises on her face. It could’ve been the shock that made her pass out. When she saw me, her whole body relaxed.
“You’re here.”
I pulled a chair closer and sat. “I had to come, you called.”
The housekeeper was standing by the window, hands. clasped, watching me with a tight smile. I looked at her and she understood. She gave a small nod and left the room, closing the door behind her.

couldn’t even imagine what Jenna could have done to her but whatever she did, it must’ve traumatized her a lot.
“How would I face my family? My friends? I wouldn’t survive it, Kieran. I wouldn’t.”
“Stop.” I leaned forward. “You’re overthinking this. Focus on getting better. I’ll make sure everything is settled.”
She shook her head again. “Everything started because of me. I’ll apologize to her myself. To both of them. I don’t want any more misunderstanding.”
“You’re the one sitting in a hospital bed with bruises on your face.” I kept my voice level. “You don’t owe anyone an apology. They owe you one.”
She didn’t argue. She just closed her eyes and pressed her head back into the pillow, tears still running, and I sat there until her breathing evened out.
I left the room and made my way to the department where Serena worked.
I found her in a room at the end of the corridor, a small staff break room, fluorescent-lit, a narrow table pushed against the wall.

She was alone.
She had a container of food open in front of her, a fork in her right hand, and a stack of printed articles beside her plate. When I walked in, she glanced up once and went back to eating.
I sat down across from her.
The table was barely wide enough for two people. Her food smelled like ginger and sesame. She picked up a piece of broccoli and ate it without looking at me.
She was wearing makeup today. Her lips were a muted rose, her lashes darker than usual, her skin even and
smooth.
