Chapter 28
Serena
Kieran appeared out of nowhere.
One second I was standing there with every eye in the lobby burning into me, and the next he was on the ground beside Sophie, pulling her against him, his hand cradling the back of her head.
“What happened?” His voice was low, and careful, a sight I had forgotten he could ever have..
She turned her tear-streaked face into his chest. “I just wanted to apologize to her.” A sob broke through. “I came here to make peace but she pushed me. I didn’t expect her
to-”
“Shh.” He lifted her from the floor in one motion,
carrying her like she weighed nothing, her head tucked beneath his chin. Then his eyes found mine over the top of her head.
“What kind of a doctor are you?” He asked me coldly, the lasgword cracking to show his care and worry for her 1:18

your hands on her.”
I looked at Sophie curled against his chest. At his arms wrapped around her and the dozen faces staring at me. with open mouths and wide eyes.
The truth wouldn’t save me here.
If I said I hadn’t touched her, that she’d fallen on her own, that I’d simply pulled my arm free, nobody in this lobby would believe me. They’d seen the aftermath. They’d drawn their conclusions the moment her body hit
the floor.
And Kieran had already chosen his version.
So I gave him one worth remembering.
“Your precious lover came looking for trouble.” I kept my voice level. “And I gave her trouble. In fact, I should’ve skipped the push and slapped her across the face.”
The lobby went silent. A gasp sounded through the silence.
Ödidn’t wait. I turned and walked toward the exit

“Serena!” A hand caught my elbow halfway down the corridor. I spun and found one of my colleagues from Gerald’s department, her eyes wide and curious.
“What happened back there?” She glanced over my shoulder toward the lobby. “Who were those two?”
I followed her gaze. Kieran stood at the end of the hall, Sophie still in his arms, watching me.
“They’re married,” I said.
His expression didn’t change but his body did. His shoulders locked and his grip on Sophie shifted, the smallest tell that my words had landed where I’d aimed
them.
I scoffed, turned my back on both of them, and left.
Kieran
I got Sophie settled back in her room.
The nurses checked her vitals, adjusted her IV, and left her to rest. She gripped my hand until her eyes closed, and even after her breathing slowed, her fingers stayed:18

I sat there, replaying what Serena had said.
They’re married.
She’d told her colleague that I was married to Sophie. M
I didn’t know what to say to that or what to do with a wife who’d stopped fighting me and started fighting dirty instead.
Trevor was waiting in the corridor when I stepped out. He jerked his head toward the exit and I followed him without a word.
We ended up in the parking lot, leaning against his car under a sky that had gone gray. He lit a cigarette, took a long drag, and exhaled before speaking.
“I’m not here to take sides.” He said first and that alone
showed me he was taking sides.
“Then what are you here for?”
He ignored the question. “I drove Jenna to Sophie’s house that night.”

I went still.
“I was there,” he continued, tapping ash off the end of his cigarette. “I heard the whole thing. The housekeeper was running her mouth the second Jenna walked in. Told her that you’d make her pay for showing up, she even called Sophie your precious lover.” He looked at me. “And Sophie herself told Jenna that she came back to this country for you.”
My jaw tightened.
“Jenna is your sister,” Trevor said. “She’s been under your roof her entire life. She grew up right in front of you. And you’re ready to throw her out over a woman who disappeared for six years and showed up with a suitcase and a sob story?”
“The reason I didn’t marry Sophie was my grandfather.” I kept my voice even. “He tore us apart by sending her away. She ended up in an abusive marriage because of his interference.”
“Sophie’s been gone for six years.” Trevor dropped the cigarette and crushed it under his heel. “That’s enough time to change a person, Kieran. But Jenna’s been right:18 beside you this whole time. How can vou not know who
