Serena
Trevor shook his head slowly.
“I can’t give you that kind of money.” His voice was coated with hesitation. “You’re my friend, Serena. But Kieran is my best friend. I can’t go against him like that. I need to stay on safe ground.”
I understood. I hadn’t really been serious about asking. The number was so absurd it was almost funny. A billion dollars.
But Jenna couldn’t let it go. She paced the living room with her jaw tight and her fists balled.
“He owns you,” she said. “That money is a leash. He knows you can’t pay it and that’s the whole point.”
“Jenna-”
“I’m sorry.” She stopped and looked at me with wet eyes. “I’m sorry I can’t help.”

a hug and held her until her breathing settled.
Trevor clapped his hands together. “Let’s go do something. Food, perhaps? Something fun like shopping? Anything to get your mind somewhere else.”
It was a kind offer. But my skin had been running hot all day. I had figured it was leftover from whatever Bridget had put in the drinks the night before, but the warmth kept crawling back no matter what I did.
And there was the baby. I needed rest. I needed to figure out what was going on inside my body, the doctor had told me to rest and I have been doing quite the opposite.
“I’ll see you both later,” I said. “I just want to sleep.”
They didn’t push. After some more comforting, they left.
I went upstairs and opened my laptop.
I typed the search into the bar and punched in some changes in the second month of pregnancy, I scrolled through article after article until the picture came
together. There would be increased blood flow, higher sensitivity and hormonal surges that could spike desire at random.

It was the pregnancy.
My body was not reacting to what Bridget had put in the drinks. It was reacting to the life growing inside me. At this stage, the hormones running through my system were built to make me crave one thing:
Sex.
My face went hot just reading about it.
could not imagine wanting anyone who was not Kieran. But the thought of his hands on me after those same hands had been on Sophie made my stomach flip.
I closed the laptop, pulled the covers over myself, and forced my eyes shut.
When I woke up, the bedroom was dim and Kieran was standing by the closet.
He was pulling his shirt over his head. The fabric dragged up his torso and I watched his back shift and tighten as he moved. His shoulders were wide, his arms thick with muscle that flexed when he tossed the shirt into the
hamper.

The heat I thought I had slept off came back so hard my mouth went dry.
I grabbed the water from the nightstand and drank half the glass in one go.
He turned around. “How are you feeling?”
“Fine.” I put the glass down. “I need to sleep.”
He walked into the bathroom and I heard the shower run
for ten minutes. When he came out, steam trailed behind him and the smell of clean soap filled the room. His hair was damp and his skin was glistening under the light he smelled like nothing but himself.
No perfume. No floral scent. Nothing that belonged to
someone else.
He pulled on a pair of black pajamas and got into bed.
“Are you going to work tomorrow?” he asked.
“Yes.”
We both sat in silence. At the very least, we weren’t

yelling at each other.
My body was sensitive. Every nerve was lit and pulsing and the ache between my thighs had turned into something maddening. I pressed my legs together beneath the sheets and tried to think about something
else.
I was not going to make the first move. If he had already gotten his fill somewhere else tonight then I would rather burn than beg.
I turned my back to him.
