The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 40

Chapter 40

Serena

Kieran was right behind me.

I ran toward the escalator and his footsteps matched mine, he was drawing closer. It was as if no matter where I ran to, I could never escape.

“Serena.” His voice was low but still enough to travel from his lips to my ears and cause a sense of dread to wash over me.

“You have to stop running, Serena. Let’s talk?”

“Ahhh!” A scream tore out of me.

I screamed loud enough that every person on the floor

turned to look.

I didn’t care.

Tears ran down my face and I kept screaming and I kept running because if I stopped he would catch me and I qogld not let him touch me right now.

Jenna was the first to reach me. She grabbed my arm and pulled me behind her, then turned to face her brother.

“Stay away from her,” Jenna said.

His expression darkened. “Mind your business,” Kieran said.

Trevor stepped in. He put himself between Kieran and me and held up both hands. “What are you doing? Stop. She doesn’t want anything to do with you right now.”

I grabbed the back of Jenna’s jacket with both fists. “Take me home.” My voice cracked. “Please. I want to go home.”

Kieran spoke over me. “I’ll take my wife home.”

Something inside my chest snapped. I screamed again. I didn’t want to leave with him, I wanted nothing to do

with him.

I was shaking and pulling at Jenna’s jacket and my body was moving on its own, twisting away from his voice like it was something that could burn me.

Jenna wrapped her arms around me. “We’ll take you 278 away. It’s okay. We’ll take vou.”

Trevor turned to Kieran. “Stop. You’re scaring her. Can you not see that she doesn’t want you near her?”

Jenna was close to tears herself. “Please,” she said to her brother. “Just let her go.”

Kieran did not move. “Serena is my wife. Taking care of her is my responsibility.”

I heard his words and they meant nothing. He said wife and responsibility and duty and none of it matched what he did.

He said all the right things and then he walked into a pharmacy and bought pads for another woman. He held me at night and left me in the morning. He spoke like a husband and acted like a stranger.

This was all my fault. I was the one who harbored such feelings for him. I was the one who wanted to make him marry me. He wouldn’t have. I knew he didn’t want me

and I still married him.

I showed him when I was younger that I was a fool for him and he was just treating me the way I had always gogtrayed myself to be.

Kieran reached past Jenna and grabbed my hand. He pushed his sister aside and pulled me toward him. “She’s my wife and I’m taking her home.”

Trevor grabbed my other arm. “Let her go.”

I was caught between them. Kieran pulled one way and Trevor pulled the other and I stood in the middle of the tug with my arms stretched and my chest heaving and people staring from every direction.

I didn’t want this. I didn’t want any of this.

I ripped myself free from both of them.

The force of my pull threw me off balance. My foot missed the edge of the step and for one second I was weightless. The ceiling spun above me and then gravity took over.

I was falling down and the last thing I could hear was Jenna screaming my name.

heart stopped.

I ran. I took the steps three at a time and reached the bottom just as a crowd started to form around her. Someone was already on the phone calling for emergency services. A man in a polo shirt knelt beside her and pressed two fingers to her neck.

I shoved him aside and dropped to my knees.

She was conscious but barely. Her eyes were open and unfocused and a cut on her forehead was bleeding into her hair. Her arm was bent at an angle that made my

stomach turn.

The ambulance arrived in minutes. They loaded her onto a stretcher and I climbed in beside her without asking for permission.

All of this over sanitary pads. I hadn’t even bought them. I was in the area when Sophie called, and since the pharmacy was close I stopped in to grab what she asked for. That was it.

And now my wife was on a stretcher with blood on her face

At the hospital, they cleaned her cuts and bandaged her arm and legs. The bruises were scattered across her body. The doctor said nothing was broken but she needed rest and observation.

I sat beside her bed. Jenna and Trevor were in the room

too. Jenna sat on the opposite side with her arms crossed and her face hard. Trevor leaned against the wall near the door.

Jenna broke the silence first. “If I was in her shoes, I would lose it and just commit murder.”

“Shut up,” I said.

Serena opened her eyes.

I leaned forward. “Are you okay?”

She looked at me. Then she turned her head away and

stared at the wall.

She didn’t look sad. She didn’t look angry. She just looked away, her eyes were not cold nor did they shine with

tears. There was nothing behind her eyes.

Almost soulless.
