Chapter 46
Serena
I had been in a terrible mood for days and I knew exactly why.
In the morning, I freshened up quickly and had no plans to wear makeup. But after I looked at my reflection, I changed my mind. The dark circles under my eyes had dark circles of their own. My skin looked grey. I did something simple with concealer and blush in an attempt to hide my dark circles and to bring color to my cheeks.
After the fall from the escalator, I needed to get checked at the maternity ward. I needed to talk to the nurse about my stress levels and make sure my baby was still okay. So I got dressed and went to work.
I was walking through the east wing when I ran into
Misha.
It made sense that he was here. His pack invested heavily in medical care. They funded hospitals and research projects across the region. Seeing him at the hospital was as normal as seeing a doctor.

“Gerald’s new apprentice.” He smiled. “How are you holding up?”
“I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?” He adjusted his glasses. “Because even makeup can’t hide how tired you look.”
I let out a small laugh. “It’s something new.”
We stood in the corridor and talked for a few minutes. He asked about Gerald. I asked about his practice. It was
easy conversation.
Then a thought came to me.
Misha’s family was wealthy. If anyone knew the right people for what I needed, it was him.
“Do you know anyone in the auction business?” I asked.
He looked at me. “Are you looking to buy or sell?”
“Sell. But only if I get a good price.”
He adjusted his glasses again. It seemed to be something

he did when he was thinking.

“That’s a coincidence,” he said. “I have a friend in the business and I’m meeting him after work today. You should join us.”
Hope blossomed in my heart at that. “I would love to.”
This was good. This was the first step toward getting free.
I didn’t ask Jenna or Trevor for help because they were too close to Kieran. I didn’t want his fingerprints anywhere near this. I needed clean hands and a clean sale and people who had no loyalty to the Thawthorne name.
I got through my shift. Gerald ran me hard as usual and I welcomed it because the work kept my mind from wandering to places that made me sick.
When my shift ended, I walked out the main entrance expecting to see Misha.
Kieran was standing in the parking lot.
He was leaning against his car with his arms at his sides. and his eyes already locked on the door like he had been waiting for the exact second I would walk through it.

He came toward me. “How was work? How are you doing?”
“What do you want?”
“I booked a table at the restaurant you like.” He spoke like this was normal. Like we were a normal married couple making dinner plans. “Let your parents know and I’ll take you there.”
I opened my mouth to respond but then I noticed the people walking past us. Some nurses and even some other people. They were all looking at Kieran.
