I drove straight to the pack house.

The family was in the main room when I walked in. Grandfather sat at the head of the table with a cup of coffee in his hand. My father was beside him. Two servants stood near the wall.

I dropped the paternity test on the table in front of my grandfather.

“This is the result,” I said. “I’m the father. If you want, I’ll

take another test right here.”

My mother picked up the document before Grandfather could touch it. She read it through and her face changed. Her legs gave out beneath her and she stumbled sideways. Jenna caught her before she hit the floor and my mother let out a sound that was somewhere between a gasp and a scream.

She was definitely exaggerating.

I turned back to Crandfather “The presfic night there.

Leave Ethan and Sophie alone.”

He didn’t respond. He just sipped his coffee and watched me with cold eyes.

“If you don’t stay away from them,” I continued, “I’ll make my relationship with Sophie public. I’ll claim Ethan as my son in front of the entire pack and give them the life they deserve.”

My father cut in. “And what about Serena? What will people say when they find out you’re still married and have a bastard outside?”

I shrugged. “I’ll support Sophie and her son in private. I won’t make it public. And I won’t divorce Serena.” I stated the last part firmly because the contrary would never be accepted.

Grandfather set his coffee down and rose to his feet. He

looked at me for a long time.

“Even if I leave Sophie and the boy alone,” he said, “what about your wife? Will she put up with this?”

“Serena is kindhearted,” I said. “She’ll come around.”

Grandfather was quiet for a moment. Then he spoke.

“Fine. If Ethan is your son, you can give them money. You can look after them. But they don’t get an official status in this pack.”

“They won’t get the title,” I said. “As long as you don’t

touch them.”

“And Serena,” he added. “Make sure she doesn’t cause a scene. Make sure she doesn’t divorce you. If she does, the deal is off.”

I nodded. We had an agreement.

I walked out of the house without looking back. There was nothing that needed to be said that hadn’t already been voiced out.

Serena was too in love with me to leave. She had seen the fake paternity test and all she did was cry and drop off divorce papers. That was just steam. That was just her way of begging me to explain, to apologize, to come back. to her.

Divorce was the last thing on her mind.

Serena

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was Kieran’s message on my phone.

He was asking to meet up.

I read it and put my phone down without delivering a

response.

Around noon, Misha’s call came in.

“The appraisal you sent to the auction house would be ready in a week.” Was the first thing he said when I answered the call.

My heart leaped out in joy.

“Oh my goodness, thank you so much.” I said happily.

“You don’t have to thank me, I hope a week isn’t too long for you.”

“No it isn’t.” I chuckled. I could wait a week. I had been through worse than waiting.

During lunch, my mother showed up at the hospital with

a container of food. I took her to one of the private rooms

in the back and we sat down together while I ate.

She watched me eat in silence while I told her what

happened at work. There really wasn’t anything important and I could tell that half of what I was saying fell on deaf ears.

“We’ve been thinking about Josh,” she suddenly said. “If you’re getting divorced, the money from the jewelry will have to go to Kieran. Whatever is left won’t stretch far. His school fees are expensive. Maybe it’s better if he transfers somewhere simpler.”

I put my fork down.

Josh was brilliant. He was thriving in that school. He was the kind of kid who absorbed everything around him and turned it into something better. Pulling him out now would be like cutting a plant at the root just when it

started to bloom.

“The money will be enough,” I said. “Mom, don’t worry about it.”

“Serena-”

“Our family has fallen.” I looked at her. “We’ve lost the pack, the territory, our name. The only thing we have left is Josh’s future. We have to give him the best. That’s not negotiable.”

She looked at me for a while. Then she nodded.

I reached across the table and held her hand. “I’ll get the jewelry back. I promise you.”

She squeezed my fingers.

“The mistake I made with Kieran,” I said, “I won’t make it again. He will be the first and last man I give myself to like that. I will never lose myself in a marriage again.” My throat was tight but I pushed through it. “I’ll make sure we live comfortably. All of us.”

My mother pulled me into her arms and I pressed my face into her shoulder. I could feel her crying quietly against my hair.

Kieran

I stood outside the door with the food in my hands.
