Kieran kept his lips on mine and reached across the bed; his hand swept over the sheets for the phone.
The voice did not stop. “Hello? Hello? Kieran, please, Ethan is burning up-”
At the end of the sentence, her voice broke into a sob.
I shoved him off me and stood up. I pulled my dress back into place, fixed the strap that slipped off my shoulder, and smoothed the fabric down.
Behind me, I heard his voice. “Hello.”
I turned around. He sat on the edge of the bed with the phone against his face; his free hand rubbed the back of his neck. His lips looked swollen.
“I’m here,” he said into the phone. “Calm down. Tell me what happened.”
The tenderness in his voice made my stomach tn. 11:40

“You disgust me,” I said.
He reached for my arm but I pulled away.
“Serena-”
I walked out of the suite. The corridor was long and bright; Aina whimpered inside me and pressed toward the bond, toward the room behind me, but I hit the elevator button and stepped inside when the doors
opened.
I reached my room, changed out of my clothes and went to bed.
The sound of an incoming message made my eyes flutter open. The sun filtered through the curtain casting a golden glow into the room ans spreading its warmth.
I reached for my phone on the nightstand only to find a message from Kieran.
“Had to leave, it’s an emergency. I’ll call you soon.”
In other words, he had to go look after his son. Sophie

I rose to my feet and walked into th bathroom. On the wall was a mirror. I lifted the hem of my pajamas and stared into the mirror..
My stomach was still flat. I pressed my hand against it.
Would he think of leaving Sophie for me if he found out I was carrying his child?
Probably not. She is the one he loves.
I dropped the shirt and turned away from the mirror.
The exchange program ended three days later and I returned home. Things were steady for the first few days. I went to work, I came home, I studied, I slept. Kieran’s name did not appear on my phone and I did not reach for it.
I lived in peace until a call came into my phone early in the morning. The caller ID showed it was from the
auction house.
“Mrs. Thawthorne, we’re pleased to inform you that your jewelry has been listed at a starting price of one and a
half billion dollars.”

My hand gripped the phone so tightly my knuckles ached.
“We’ll contact you as soon as a buyer is confirmed,” the woman continued.
“Really?” I said in excitement, almost squealing. “Thank you, thank you so much.”
For the first time in weeks, something warm spread through my chest.
I went to work with a smile on my face. My heart was filled with joy, I was finally getting out If the sick marriage I had found myself in. The freedom I so much craved would soon be mine.
I stepped into the hospital, holding my bag, and smiling at everybody who walked past me.
A nurse stopped stepped in front of me. “Dr. Thawthorne.”
“Oh hello.” I smiled politely at her.
She returned the smile. “The director wants to see you in
his office right away.”
