Trevor showed up at my door twenty minutes after Serena left.
He walked in and dropped onto the sofa crossing one ankle over his knee. “I saw Serena in the elevator and I
drove her home.” He looked at me. “From what I could tell, you two fought.”
“Did she say anything?” I asked.
“She said a lot of things.”
I rubbed my jaw. “I’m guessing she tried make you convince me to agree to the divorce.”
“Yeah.” Trevor tilted his head. “Sort of.”
I looked at him; something in his voice did not sit right. “Was there anything else?”
Trevor leaned back. “She told me she regrets marrying yog and she said she doesn’t want anything to d with2:34

I turned away from him and grabbed a glass from the cabinet and poured myself wine. “If you take Sophie and Ethan out of the picture, Serena and I don’t have any problems.”
“Even if you remove Sophie and Ethan,” Trevor said, “the mess they created is too big and you cannot clean it up on your own, Kieran.”
I took a drink; the wine was bitter on my tongue. “Serena relied on me since she was a child. All I need to do is give
her time and she will come around.”
“She calmed down and what she wants is to divorce you.” He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. “She’s not the girl you knew. She is not the child who ran after you and begged for your attention; she is a woman. now and she knows what she wants.” He paused. “What you did with Sophie broke something in her that cannot be glued back together.”
My fingers tightened around the glass. “She said all that?”
“Yes.” Trevor held my gaze. “She also said she wished she
married me instead.”

Cora snarled inside me; the sound vibrated through my jaw and my grip on the glass tightened until the crystal groaned.
“Not only that,” Trevor continued, “she also said that if she can’t get a divorce from you, she would kill herself.”
The glass stopped halfway to my mouth. My blood cooled and the room sharpened around me; every edge, every shadow, every sound turned crisp.
She pressed a blade against her wrist once before and opened the skin without blinking. She did it to keep me from walking out the door, and I stayed by her side until the bandages were clean and the color came back to her
face.
Then I left anyway.
If she said she would kill herself, she meant it.
“I took care of her for years,” I said; my voice came out low. “I took care of her family and I gave her everything she wanted.” I set the glass down. “I admit that with Sophie and Ethan, I messed up. But it’s not as bad as

“You’re only going to think it’s not bad,” Trevor said, “until Serena ends up dead.”
“She won’t do anything to herself.” I shook my head. “Serena loves her family too much and she would never put them through that kind of pain.”
Her love for her family was a chain she could not break; it was the one thing that kept her anchored to this world when everything else fell apart.
But the ache in my chest would not ease. Serena wanting another man, wanting Trevor, choosing anyone on this earth over me; the thought sat in my gut and burned.

I went to the hospital and found the same maternity doctor in her office.
She listened to me and shook her head. “It’s too soon to tell,” she said. “The bond was renewed just two nights ago and I can’t give you results based on such a short time.” She wrote something on her clipboard. “Come back in a week or two and we’ll run the tests again.”

I nodded and left.
On the way home, I stopped at a pharmacy to buy medicine for Josh; his wrist still needed care and the painkillers were running low.
I stood at the counter and waited for the pharmacist to fill the prescription.
A pair of heels clicked against the tile behind me and I turned.
Sophie stood three feet away. She wore high heels, full makeup, and a dress so tight it was a second skin. Not a single scratch or bruise marked her body; no one would
believe a car hit this woman.
“How is Josh’s injury?” she asked; her voice dripped with a concern so fake it curdled in the air.
I turned back to the counter and Sophie leaned past me and addressed the pharmacist. “Give me a box of condoms and a pack of contraceptives, please.”
The pharmacist placed them on the counter and Sophie picked them up and held the box out to me.

“Since you and Kieran haven’t slept together in a while,” she said, “you need these.”
I looked at the box in her hand and my palm connected with her cheek before she finished smiling. The slap cracked through the pharmacy and her head snapped to the side; the condoms hit the floor and scattered across the tile.
Sophie pressed her hand to her face. “I was only trying to help.” Her eyes went wet. “Kieran told me he would never let you get pregnant, and that’s why I brought these.” She straightened and her voice sweetened. “I’m not jealous if Kieran spends time with you. He’s been sleeping with me for weeks now, and I’m just worried that your husband left you all alone.”
My blood was a furnace; it roared in my temples and pressed behind my eyes.
“I am still married to Kieran,” I said; my voice was low and each word was a nail driven into wood. “Kieran and
I are still happily married. What do you think you’re doing?”
