Kieran

The Alpha house was loud when we walked in and the noise washed over me and left nothing behind.

I sat down in the nearest chair; the cushion absorbed my weight and my body stayed where it landed.

The room was a storm. Grandfather’s voice cut through the air and Father’s voice met it while Mother’s voice clashed against both of them; three people argued and shouted and pointed fingers and their words broke apart before they reached me.

Grandfather turned to me. “We agreed with Serena’s family. After the project with the allied pack wraps up, you will get a divorce.” His voice was iron. “In the meantime, sort out Sophie and Ethan. Get rid of them quietly and make sure nobody breathes a word of it.”

Father stepped forward. “You are the Alpha of this pack and you need to act like one.”

only way to make them stop was to give them what they wanted.

“I agree,” I said.

Mother came to me after the others left the room. She pulled a chair beside mine and sat down; her face was tight with fury but her eyes held something heavier than anger, something that pressed down on both of us.

“Serena was your wife,” she said. “She gave up her life for you. She changed her course of study, she gave you her devotion, she loved you with everything she had.” Her voice cracked. “And all you paid her back with was cheating on her and fathering a child outside the marriage.”

My hands sat in my lap and my fingers did not move.

“She did not deserve this,” Mother continued. “She was not wrong to ask for a divorce and you are the one who owes her. You owe her the divorce, Kieran. Serena is protecting her heart.”

“I didn’t say she was wrong for asking,” I said; my voice was low and hollow.

Mother’s words ran into the wall of what already occupied my skull. Serena’s face was there, her tears and her voice and the way she called our intimacy a transaction; the words replayed on a loop and each repetition dug the groove deeper. The pain on her face was a bruise behind my ribs; it throbbed every time I

drew a breath.

Mother leaned forward. “Serena is not asking for anything from the divorce. She just wants it to be done.” She pressed her hand flat against the armrest. “But everything she suffered, she deserves something for it. You can’t let her walk out of this marriage with nothing.

You owe her.”

“I know,” I said. “I’ll take care of it.”

Mother searched my face, then she stood and walked out and the door closed behind her.

The silence filled the space around me and settled on my shoulders and added its weight to everything else.

Days passed and I did not go to her.

“Don’t get the wrong idea,” Misha said. “Serena and I are just colleagues and I’m looking out for her. Our relationship is nothing more than that.”
