The Alpha Who Never Loved Me (Serena and Kieran) novel Chapter 89

Chapter 89

Kieran

The glass was warm in my hand and the whiskey was down to its last finger.

Serena needed to come home. Grandfather was serious about the divorce; both families reached an agreement and the lawyers would handle it without me if I did not act. I needed a way to bring her back before the paperwork buried me.

What if I told her I agreed? What if I pretended the fight was over and I surrendered; she might board a plane and walk through that door.

But Serena was not stupid. A lie that obvious would snap the last thread of credibility I held.

Trevor sat down beside me. “What are you thinking

about?”

I could not tell him; the man was a pipeline straight to

Serena.

“What’s on your mind?”

“I don’t know.” I drained the last of the glass. “I made a decision, an important one, and I need her here so we can reach an agreement.”

Trevor’s eyes narrowed. “Is this about the divorce?”

“Yes.” I set the glass down. “I decided to divorce Serena. The only thing I need is for her to come back so we can say our final goodbyes.”

Trevor laughed. “There’s no way you’re that sentimental. I don’t believe a word you just said.”

“Believe whatever you want.”

He looked at me; his eyes moved across my face and calculated and weighed and did not buy a single syllable.

“If that’s the case,” he said, “I’ll inform Serena.”

“Shut up.” My jaw tightened. “You always want to run and tell Serena everything.” I exhaled. “I’m still thinking about it. The thought crossed my mind but I’m still working through it.”

Trevor shook his head. “Just make a decision and let it be. Your marriage cannot be saved and the more you hold on, the more you lose.” He stood. “Let her go.”

I left the bar and drove home.

I woke up to the soft vibration of my phone. It was a text message from Sophie. Can you please take me to the Doctor’s office today?

For Sophie to suddenly decide to see the doctor, it could be that her depression had worsened considering all that she had been through, this was really expected of her.

We reached the hospital and immediately she made her way tot he doctor’s office while I stood in the corridor and

waited.

My eyes swept the hallway and my pulse kicked.

Sylvia walked down the corridor toward the reception desk; she wore a scarf over her hair and her pace was slow and her arm gripped the strap of her bag.

My phone was in my hand before I finished the thought. I raised it and took a picture of Sylvia and typed a message

to Serena.

Your mother has been in the hospital. She’s been coming here frequently and it seems her health is getting worse.

I hit send.

Serena called within two minutes.

“Happy birthday,” I said.

“Shut up.” Her voice was sharp and breathless. “What do you mean my mother’s health is getting worse?”

“I’m at the hospital and I saw her. She’s been coming here but they didn’t want to tell you.”

“They didn’t tell me because there’s nothing to tell.” Her voice climbed. “My mother’s health is fine and you’re lying to me.”

“I’m in the hospital right now and I saw her with my own eyes. It’s up to you what you want to believe.” I kept my voice calm. “Either believe your parents, who would never trouble you with their problems, or believe me.”

“You have plenty to gain from lying.”

“It’s up to you,” I said, and I hung up.

Sophie finished her appointment and we walked toward the exit. Near the main entrance, Frederick and Sylvia walked together; Frederick held the door open for his wife and Sylvia adjusted her scarf.

I approached them.

“How are you both doing?” I asked. “Is everything alright?”

Sylvia looked at me; her face was guarded but she did not turn away. “I’m fine.”

She answered me, and that was more than she gave me in

months.

“Serena’s birthday is today,” I said.

Frederick nodded. “It is.”

“I made a decision about the divorce.” I kept my eyes on both of them. “I’m ready to agree, but I want Serena here so we can reach a final agreement together.”

Sylvia’s eyes narrowed. “We don’t believe you.”

“It’s the truth.”

They looked at each other; a silent conversation passed

between them.

“We’ll reach out to Serena,” Frederick said.

They walked away and Sophie stood beside me; her brow creased.

“You agreed?” she asked. “You’re really going to divorce your wife?”

I looked at her. “I will never divorce my wife.”

Her lips parted but no sound came out.

I drove her home. My phone rang before I reached my own building.

The caller ID showed the name of Josh’s school.

I answered and the administrator’s voice came through, clipped and strained. “Mr. Thawthorne, we’re calling 12:43 about Josh Blackwell. He’s not on school grounds and it

appears he left campus without authorization.”

My blood went cold; the warmth drained from my hands. and my grip tightened around the steering wheel.

“When?” I asked.

“We’re not certain. His teacher noticed his absence during the afternoon roll call.”

I hung up and called Frederick; the line rang and rang and went to voicemail. I called Sylvia; voicemail. I called Frederick again; voicemail.

I turned the car toward their house; the tires screamed against the pavement. I ran to the front door and knocked and my knuckles cracked against the wood and the sound echoed through the empty house.

I knocked again, harder.

Nobody was home.
