The cold wind bit at my skin as I stepped off the gravel path and into the thick woods. My breath came out in soft white clouds, and ! hugged my arms around myself. Every shadow looked like it could move. Every rustling leaf made my ears twitch. i hated how quiet it

was.

“Where is this place? I muttered, more to the trees than myself

Naia had sent a message asking me to meet her here. Said it was important. Said she couldn’t say more unless we were alone. But why? Why out here in the middle of nowhere? Why not at home, or even near town?

The deeper I went, the more I felt the cold. It wasn’t just the weather. It was something else. A stillness in the air. A warning I couldn’t name. If anything jumped out right now, I wouldn’t hesitate to shift.

Then I saw it.

A crooked, isolated building sat between tall pines. The brick was crumbling, vines crawling up the sides. The windows were broken. It looked abandoned. And yet… a faint light glowed from within.

“Naia?” I called softly.

Her shadow moved near the door. She stepped out just enough for me to see her.

“Hey, Serene,” she said with a calmness that didn’t match the setting.

“What is this place?” I asked, stepping closer. “Why didn’t you just tell me whatever this is back at the house?”

“I needed privacy,”

Her voice was cold. No warmth. No smile. Something wasn’t right.

Before I could finish, a hand grabbed me from behind. A thick cloth slammed against my nose and mouth. The scent hit me immediately- sharp, chemical, burning. I struggled, kicked back, tried to scream. But my vision blotted.

Everything spun.

Chapter 115

When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was the pain in my wrists. Chains. Cold, thick metal wrapped tightly around my arms and ankles I was on the floor of some dark room, stone beneath me, damp and cold. My mouth was dry. My head felt like it had been split open.

Voices echoed nearby. I lifted my head slowly.

Several people stood in the shadows. I didn’t recognize most of them. But one face I knew–too well.

Naia.

“Naia?” I croaked, barely able to speak. “What’s going on? Why am I chained? Who are these people?”

She stepped forward and smiled–but it wasn’t her usual smile. This one was cruel. Mocking.

“You’re still so naïve,” she said, folding her arms. “Still the perfect little princess.”

“What are you talking about?” My heart thudded.

Naia tilted her head. “What, are you shocked? Your Daddy’s not here to protect you anymore. No more running to him when things get

hard.”

My lips parted in disbelief. “Naia, I—”

“I never liked you, Serene,” she snapped. “I hated you. Always walking around like you were better than everyone. Always getting the love. the attention, the credit–even when I worked twice as hard.”

I blinked through the pain. “I never tried to take anything from you.”

“But you did,” she said bitterly. “You had something I never had. A father. A real home. People loved you. Me? I was just your shadow. The extra girl standing next to ‘Serene the special one.“”

She let out a laugh that chilled me more than the wind outside ever could.

“Now your father’s dead,” she spat, “and I’m not pretending anymore.”

Tears threatened to form in my eyes, but I held them back. “Why? Why are you doing this?”

“You want to know how I got my own place? How I escaped Taurus? How I survived when everyone else thought I should be dead?” she asked, her voice rising. “The Elders helped me. They gave me everything I wanted. A place. Freedom. Power. All I had to do was bring them you.”

My heart froze.
