Chapter 30
The morning came slowly, dragging in light that barely made it
through the tiny barred window above Selene’s head. She sat on the
cold metal chair in the corner, wrapped in an oversized shirt that
smelled like dust and iron. Her wrists were bruised, but the cuffs were
finally off–Mark had taken them off the night before, claiming she’d
“earned a bit of trust.”
She didn’t believe that for a second.
The room remained silent except for the hum of a generator
somewhere beyond the walls. Her eyes drifted toward the single steel
door. She knew there were at least three bolts on the outside. No
windows. No keys. No chance of escape–yet.
Selene glanced at the small notebook she’d been given. It was blank,
but Mark told her she could write whatever she wanted. The pen.
beside it had a camera in the cap. She’d figured that out the moment.
she unscrewed it and found a blinking red light.
Still, she kept writing.
Not because she wanted to communicate. But because it gave her
time to think.

Footsteps echoed in the hallway.
She stiffened.
The door opened with its usual heavy clank, and Mark stepped in-
same calm eyes, same unnerving smile. Dressed in a crisp black shirt
and slacks, he looked more like a professor than a captor.
He held a tray in one hand. Oatmeal, fruit, and tea.
“Morning, sunshine,” he said, setting it on the desk. “I thought we
could talk today.”
Selene’s gaze didn’t shift from the tray.
“I’m not hungry,” she murmured.
Mark stepped closer, crouching to her eye level. “You need to eat. You
don’t get answers on an empty stomach.”
She kept her expression neutral, though her jaw tensed slightly.
“What answers?”
“Ah,” he said with a soft chuckle. “Now we’re curious. That’s good.
Curiosity is what keeps people alive.”

Selene turned her face away.
Mark didn’t seem bothered. He stood and walked around the room
like a teacher pacing during a lecture. “You’ve been very composed.
Most girls in your position would be crying, screaming, trying to claw
their way out.”
“I’ve cried enough for a lifetime,” she said.
That made him pause.
For a second, he looked at her with something that almost resembled
empathy.
Then it disappeared.
“Well, lucky for you, I don’t want a mess. I want someone smart-
someone who listens.”
She looked at him now. “Listens to what?”
“To everything,” he whispered, taking a seat across from her. “I’m
going to teach you how this world really works. How power hides in
plain sight. You think you know your mate, Damian? You don’t.”
Selene’s heart skipped a beat.

She kept her voice steady. “You know him?”
Mark leaned in. “I know everyone. And more importantly, I know what they hide.”
He reached into his pocket and placed something on the table.
A flash drive.
She stared at it, unmoving.
“Everything you need to know about him, his pack, his little secrets…
it’s all in here.”
Selene didn’t reach for it.
“I’m not touching that,” she said, coldly.
