The metal door creaked open.
Selene’s head jerked toward the sound, her body stiffening against
the restraints. Her wrists ached from struggling–she hadn’t slept
properly in what felt like days. The lights overhead buzzed softly,
almost soothing in their monotony, but the footsteps approaching
weren’t comforting at all.
They were deliberate.
Measured.
Creepy.
Mark.
He stepped into the room with a mug of something hot–coffee,
judging from the scent–but didn’t offer her any. His dark hair was
slicked back, his beard neatly trimmed, and there was always a
strange glint in his eyes that never quite aligned with his expression.
The man smiled often, but it never reached his eyes..
“Good morning, sunshine,” he said, his voice overly bright. “Sleep

well?”
She said nothing. Her throat was dry. Her entire body was sore.
He crouched down beside the metal bed, leaning in just close enough
for her to smell the coffee and the faint sting of antiseptic on his
skin.
“You’re not much of a talker, are you?” he asked, tapping a finger on
the rail. “I’ve always liked quiet girls. Makes everything easier.”
Selene turned her face away, refusing to meet his gaze.
Mark chuckled. “Still playing strong. Cute.”
He stood up, walked to the table by the wall, and flicked on a screen.
It showed her–live feed from the ceiling camera above her bed.
“You know,” he said casually, sipping from the mug, “people
underestimate how useful silence is. You can hear everything when
you’re not busy talking.”
He turned to face her again. “Like the little sounds you make when
you’re asleep. The way your breathing changes when you’re scared.
You flinch in your sleep, did you know that?”

She finally looked at him, disgust crawling up her spine.
“What do you want from me?” her voice cracked as she asked, but the
venom was there.
Mark blinked. Then smiled. “Nothing. For now. Just your presence.
You’re quite valuable, you know. I’m not sure how Damian managed
to hold onto you for so long without breaking you. But he will. They
all do eventually.”
He turned off the screen, then leaned against the wall. “You’re not
like the others.”
“Others?”
His smile widened. “You think you’re the first guest I’ve had?”
Selene’s stomach twisted.
He placed the coffee mug down with a soft clink. “I’ll be back later. I
have a surprise for you. We’re going to play a little game tonight.”
And with that, he left the room, locking the door behind him.

“You’ve gone through every street cam in that quadrant?” Damian
asked, pacing.
Mira nodded from her seat in the operations room. “Every one. We
caught the van heading into the hills, but after that, nothing. It’s like
they vanished into thin air.”
“They didn’t vanish,” Damian growled. “They’re hiding. And
someone’s helping them do it.”
Mira looked up, eyes tired. “We’ve checked every rogue outpost in the
city. No signs. Whoever this is… they’re not random.”
He slammed his fist on the table. “Of course they’re not. This was
planned.”
“Then let’s think like them,” she said softly.
He paused. “What do you mean?”
“Whoever took Selene knows her. Knows you. This wasn’t about
money. It’s personal. It’s about leverage.”
Damian’s jaw tightened.
“I have every satellite available scanning that ridge,” Mira continued.

“We’ll find her.”
Back with Selene
Later that evening, the lights dimmed, and the door opened again.
This time, Mark rolled in a cart.
On top of it? A tray of food. Actual food–soup, a piece of bread, a
bottle of water. Steam rose from the bowl.
Selene eyed it suspiciously.
“You haven’t eaten in two days,” he said gently. “I’m not here to hurt
you.”
“No?” she replied, voice sharper now. “Is that why I’m chained to a
bed in the middle of nowhere?”
Mark sighed. “You’re so dramatic.”
He walked toward her slowly, picking up the spoon. “Open your
mouth.”
She clenched her jaw.

“Fine,” he said with an exaggerated shrug. “We can just sit here and let the soup get cold.”
He waited a few seconds. Then added quietly, “I’ll release your hands. Just long enough to eat. Don’t be stupid, Selene.”
She hesitated.
Something in his tone changed when he said her name. Not warmth,
not fondness–something colder. Sharper. Like he liked the power of
saying it.
She nodded reluctantly.
He undid her wrist cuffs slowly, his touch strangely gentle.
The moment her hands were free, she snatched the spoon.
He laughed. “There she is. You do have some fire.”
Selene ignored him as she ate. She didn’t trust the food, but she
didn’t have a choice. Her body needed something, anything. And the
warmth helped her stay awake, stay alert.
“You know,” Mark said, leaning on the wall again, “you don’t have to
fight me.”

Selene looked up from the bowl, her expression hard. “I’ll fight you
until I stop breathing.”
He smiled again. “You say that now.”
The door clicked again. This time he didn’t lock her cuffs back in
place.
He just left.
And for the first time in days, she was unchained.
Selene stared at the cuffs on the bed.
That had to mean something.
Back at the Mansion
Night had fallen. Damian sat on the balcony, his hands clasped, his
mind racing. His wolf was restless beneath his skin–furious that
their mate was out there, unreachable, possibly hurt. It wasn’t just
guilt anymore.
It was fear.
Mira stepped out beside him, offering a glass of something strong.

“She’s still alive,” she said.
“How do you know?”
“She’s stubborn as hell. That girl’s not going down easy.”
Damian stared ahead.
Mira sat beside him. “We’ll get her back.”
“Not if I keep sitting here.”
He stood, finishing the drink.
“We’re going into the hills tomorrow. I don’t care what the satellites
say. We comb every inch.”
Unknown Location – Midnight
Selene sat on the edge of the metal bed, no longer restrained. Her
muscles ached, but her mind was sharper than ever.
Mark wanted something.
