I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
He tucked my hand into the crook of his arm like I was something
precious, and we made our way out of the house.
The drive to the Gala venue was quiet at first.

Chapter 52
Damian sat close beside me in the backseat, his thigh brushing mine
with every small bump in the road. The tension between us was
electric, sparking in the tight space.
“You look nervous,” he said after a few minutes, turning his head to
look at me.
“I’m fine,” I said quickly. “Just… thinking.”
His lips curled slightly. “You have nothing to be afraid of tonight.”
I turned my head to meet his gaze.
“You’re not alone anymore, Selene,” he said, his voice low and steady.
“You have me.”

I wanted to say something – anything – but the lump
made it impossible.

He reached over and intertwined our fingers, resting our joined hands
on his thigh. His warmth seeped into my skin.
“And,” he added, his tone darkening slightly, “if anyone dares look at
you the wrong way… I’ll handle it.”
I smiled a little. It wasn’t an empty threat. With Damian, it never was.

Chapter 52
When we arrived, the world exploded into light and noise.
The venue was enormous – glittering chandeliers, velvet carpets,
golden staircases leading into a grand ballroom.
Cameras flashed as we stepped out of the car.
Damian didn’t release my hand.
If anything, he pulled me closer, his palm warm and firm against my
waist. I felt like I was floating–walking through a dream.

Chapter 53
He didn’t need to.
The look he gave me – like he was going to devour me right there on
the ballroom floor – was more powerful than a thousand words.
I tucked my hand tighter into his arm, feeling the muscles beneath
his jacket flex with each step he took.
My heart thudded against my ribs, almost painfully.
I was wearing a deep red silk
gown
–
Damian’s favorite color – and it
clung to my curves in a way that made me self–conscious.
The mark on my hand, the one the Queen had left me in the dream,
was subtly visible beneath my thin silver bracelet.
Damian’s eyes dipped once to my hand.
He saw it.
And the way his jaw flexed, like he was trying to restrain himself from
doing something reckless, made my legs feel weak.
“Careful,” he murmured close to my ear, his voice rough velvet. “Keep
looking at me like that and I’ll rip this dress off you before the night’s
over.”

I blushed fiercely, dropping my gaze to the floor.
–
Before I could respond, two figures approached a tall man with
sandy brown hair and striking blue eyes, and a woman with short
black curls and a mischievous smile.
The man bowed slightly toward Damian, an air of familiarity around
him.
“Alpha Damian,” he said respectfully. “Welcome. It’s been too long.”
Damian nodded once, his hand never leaving my waist.
“Alpha Elias,” he said. “And Luna Freya.”
I blinked so that was their names.
–
Elias and Freya belonged to the Silver River Pack, one of the strongest
neighboring packs known for their warriors and alliances. They had a
reputation for loyalty – and a sharp tongue, according to the
whispers I’d heard.
Freya smiled brightly at me, her eyes twinkling.
“And you must be Selene,” she said. “The girl who’s had our fearless
Alpha wrapped around her little finger.”

I stammered, my cheeks heating up, but Damian just squeezed my
waist possessively.
