Chapter 73
The second day was harder than the first.
My body protested every movement, like it had forgotten how to
function. I could barely walk without leaning on the walls or holding
onto the furniture. But I pushed through. I had to. Lying in bed while
the man who destroyed my life still walked free… I couldn’t bear it.
Kael rarely left my side.
He didn’t ask many questions. He didn’t try to pry. But I could tell he
was always watching, always studying. There was something about
him — quiet, calculating, patient. Like he was waiting for something.
–
Or maybe someone.
I woke up that morning drenched in sweat after a nightmare that left me breathless. I had screamed in my sleep, jolting upright in bed.
Kael had been outside the room but rushed in the moment he heard me. His golden hair was slightly messy, like he’d been running his hand through it.
“You okay?” he asked softly, walking toward me.

“I’m fine,” I snapped a little too sharply, hugging my arms.
He raised an eyebrow but didn’t challenge it. “Nightmare?”
“Something like that.”
He sat at the edge of the bed but didn’t touch me. He always kept a
respectful distance
something I was grateful for.
—
“You called out a name,” he said. “Damian.”
My breath hitched. I clenched my fists. “I don’t want to talk about
him.”
Kael gave a small nod. “Alright.”
The silence that followed wasn’t awkward. It was… heavy. But not
uncomfortable.
I shifted the sheets away and swung my legs off the bed. “I need to walk. My legs feel like they’re rotting.”
“You’ll need help,” Kael said, already rising to assist me.
“I’ve got it,” I said stubbornly, wobbling as I stood.

I took two steps before collapsing forward. Kael caught me easily, his
arms wrapping around me in a way that felt too safe for comfort.
He didn’t smirk or tease. He simply helped me sit in the chair by the
window and then stepped away.
“Stubborn,” he said.
“You haven’t seen anything yet,” I muttered.
He let out the smallest laugh – almost amused. “Good. You’ll need
that fire soon.”
I looked out the window. It was cloudy, rain softly tapping against the
glass. The view showed rolling hills and trees. We were far away.
Hidden. Safe.
Or so it seemed.
“Why did you bring me here?” I asked suddenly.
Kael turned toward me, then leaned against the wall, arms crossed.
“You needed saving.”
“And you just happened to be there?”

“I make it my business to be in the right place at the right time,” he
said. “Especially when certain people are involved.”
I frowned. “What do you mean?”
Kael hesitated for the first time. Then, slowly, he walked to a drawer
and pulled out a thin black folder.
He handed it to me.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Photos. Reports. Maps.
And Damian Voss’s face on the first page.
My eyes widened. “You were tracking him?”
“I’ve been watching Damian for years,” Kael said. “He’s clever.
Ruthless. But not flawless. Especially not where you’re concerned.”
My throat dried. “Why? What does this have to do with you?”
Kael’s jaw tightened. “He wasn’t always a monster. Once, he was just
a soldier in the system. But then he started making deals. With dark
people. People who wanted power at any cost. He’s not just a man

anymore he’s part of something larger. And he took something
from me.”
“What?”
Kael didn’t answer.
Instead, he turned away and looked out the window.
“You’re not ready for that truth yet,” he said quietly.
I stared at him. “Try me.”
He smiled, just faintly. “Soon.”
That word irritated me more than it should’ve.
I pushed the folder away and stood on shaky legs. “You brought me
here, saved me, and now you’re just going to keep me in the dark?”
“I’m keeping you alive,” he replied. “The rest comes later.”
I hated how calm he was. How sure of himself. It reminded me too
much of Damian

“I don’t need your protection.”
“No,” he said, meeting my eyes. “But you need clarity. And vengeance
without clarity is just destruction.”
I didn’t respond. My mind was already spinning again. I thought of
the reports I’d read, the files on Damian’s computer. My father’s
name. The word massacre. And Taurus.
My knees gave slightly.
Kael was there again, holding me gently. “Enough for today.”
