I woke up to the soft hum of a heater and the distant ticking of a
clock. My head throbbed violently, a painful rhythm that pounded
behind my eyes. The air smelled sterile

unfamiliarity. My eyes fluttered open, squinting at the ceiling above
Where was I?
The room wasn’t mine.
The bed was too soft. The sheets too crisp. The light too warm.
I winced and slowly tried to sit up, groaning at the effort it took. My
body ached like I’d been trampled. My shoulder was bandaged, and an
IV needle was stuck in my arm. Panic rose slowly in my throat.
Then I saw him.
A man sat in a chair beside the bed, legs crossed, reading a small leather–bound book. His golden blond hair fell in soft, neat waves around his face, and he wore a black dress shirt, sleeves rolled up, veins visible on his forearms. His jawline was sharp, his features almost too perfect to be real like a statue carved by some obsessed

sculptor.
He looked up when he noticed me move.
“You’re awake,” he said calmly, his voice smooth, deep, and low – like
rich velvet.
I blinked again, trying to focus. “Where…where am I?”
“You’re safe,” he replied, closing the book and setting it on the side
table. “You’ve been here for a while.”
My heart skipped. “Where is here? Who are you?”
He smiled gently and stood, his movements precise and controlled.
“My name is Kael. You were in an accident. You were hit by a car,
bleeding badly, and unconscious. I was nearby. I took you in.”
“Accident?” I echoed, my mind foggy. “How long…?”
“You’ve been unconscious for about two weeks,” he said. “The doctor
said you had a concussion, a fractured collarbone, and some bruised
ribs. But you’re healing now.”
Two weeks?

My hands gripped the sheet. “I… I don’t remember anything.”
His expression softened. “That’s okay. It might come back in time.
You were badly shaken. You kept whispering in your sleep, but it was
incoherent.”
I looked down at myself. I was wearing a soft beige T–shirt that didn’t
belong to me, and grey sweatpants. My left arm was wrapped in
gauze. My lip was swollen, and the right side of my ribcage burned
every time I inhaled.
Kael walked to the window and pulled the curtain aside slightly,
letting in a wash of golden morning light.
“Where am I exactly?” I asked again.
“A safehouse. Mine,” he said simply. “Far from where you were before.
I didn’t think it was wise to take you to a public hospital. You’re not
the average patient.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.
He turned around, studied me with unreadable intensity. “Your scent was… unusual. Royal. Ancient. I don’t know what you are yet, but I do know you’re not just some random girl on the run.”

“Take it slow,” he said. “You’re not ready to be moving yet.”
I clenched my jaw. “I can’t stay here. I have to go back.”
He looked me dead in the eyes. “Go back where? To the man who
destroyed your pack? To the lies and manipulation? You think you’ll
get justice by walking in there broken?”
I looked away, ashamed at how easily he’d read me.
“I don’t have anywhere else to go,” I said weakly.
“Yes, you do,” he said firmly. “You’re here now. And I’m offering you a
place to rest, heal, and prepare if that’s what you want.”
–
I turned back to him. “Why are you really helping me?”
Kael gave a half–smile, not quite reaching his eyes. “Because I see
something in you… something they clearly feared. That kind of power
doesn’t deserve to be silenced.”
I didn’t know what to say. I just lay there, head pounding, ribs
burning, heart raw.
He stood and walked to the corner of the room, picking up a tray. “I
had soup made for you. And water. You should eat something.”

I watched him set the tray beside me. It smelled like chicken broth
and herbs. I hesitated, then took the spoon with trembling fingers.
He sat back down, watching me silently.
I ate slowly, trying to ignore the fact that I could still taste blood in
the back of my throat.
“When you’re strong enough,” Kael said, voice low, “I can help you
find out the rest. Who was involved. Who betrayed you. Who needs to
pay.”
