Serene’s POV
The ballroom doors opened wide, and I felt a wave of warm air and
louder voices hit me like a wall. Lights glittered from golden
chandeliers above, casting sparkles across the marble floor. Everyone was dressed like royalty. Men in sleek suits. Women in flowing gowns.
And on their faces–masks. Elegant, strange, mysterious.
A woman by the entrance handed me a mask. It was white, smooth, with golden lines around the edges. Simple but beautiful. Damian took his too–his was black and sharp at the edges, like something
from a dark fairy tale.
“You look…decent,” he muttered, barely glancing at me.
“Thanks,” I replied dryly, slipping the mask onto my face.
We stepped inside. Everyone turned to greet him.
“Alpha Damian,” one man said, walking up to us with a drink in his
hand. “It’s been a while.”
“Alpha Reddick,” Damian greeted him, shaking his hand. “Still

“You know how it is,” the man laughed. “Control or be controlled.”
Another man came forward. Tall. Old. His voice was cold. “The rogue

“She’s with me.”
I hated the way he said it. Like I was nothing but a shadow behind
him.
“She your Luna?” the man pushed.
“No,” Damian said simply.
I felt
my stomach twist.
I took a small step back. I didn’t belong here. Not really. And I needed
to find Kael.
I need the bathroom,” I said softly, touching Damian’s sleeve.
He gave me a small nod but didn’t say anything else.
I walked away quickly, the hem of my dress brushing the floor. I passed servers with trays, dancers laughing under their masks, and
guards stationed at the doors.
I entered a quieter hallway, my heels clicking against the tiles. My mask was starting to feel tight, and I pulled in a breath.
“Serene.”

I turned fast. My heart jumped.
Kael.
He had his mask pushed up onto his head so I could see his face. His
eyes were full of concern and something else–relief.
“I thought it was you,” he said, walking closer. “You blend in, but….. I
know how you walk.”
I smiled, surprised. “You do?”
He chuckled. “Yeah. You walk like you’re ready to run.”
“That’s not far from the truth,” I said.
He looked me over. “You look amazing.”
I rolled my eyes, but smiled. “You always say that.”
“Well, it’s always true,” he said, offering his hand. “Come on. We can
talk while we dance. It’s less suspicious.”
I hesitated, then took his hand. It felt warm and familiar.

We stepped back into the ballroom just as a slow song started.
Couples began to dance, gliding across the floor.
Kael’s hand moved gently to my waist, his other hand holding mine.
We swayed to the music.
“You learn anything new?” he asked in a quiet voice.
“Not yet,” I said. “But… I remembered something.”
“What?”
“My mother. I had a dream. She was singing to me in some ancient
language. Then this mark showed up on my hand.”
I showed him the faint glow beneath my sleeve.
Kael’s eyes widened. “Serene… what does that mean?”
“She was a princess. She fell in love with my father and had me during a war. She died in the forest trying to protect me.”
Kael’s grip tightened slightly. “Then that means you…”

“Yeah,” I nodded. “I’m royalty. At least, that’s what it looks like.”
He looked like he didn’t know what to say.
“You shouldn’t be here,” he said after a moment. “This place… it’s full
of enemies. I can feel it.”
“I had to come,” I said. “For a reason.”
He frowned. “Because of him?”
I looked up. My eyes moved to the second floor.
Damian stood there.
He was watching me.
Watching us.
A shadow behind his mask, but I could feel the storm in him from
