Chapter 83
We didn’t speak the entire ride home.
The silence was louder than a scream. Damian’s grip on the wheel
was too tight, knuckles pale. I kept my eyes on the road ahead, my
mind replaying Kael’s voice, the warmth of his hand on my waist, and
the look Damian gave from the balcony above just before I kissed
Kael.
I had done it deliberately.
To hurt him.
But why did my chest ache now?
As soon as we entered the house, Damian slammed the door shut, the
sound echoing through the silent halls.
I kept walking, heading upstairs, my dress swaying around my legs.
“Serene,” his voice was sharp. “Stop right there.”
I paused on the second step.

Chapter 83
I wasn’t angry anymore. I was exhausted.
I peeled off the dress slowly, folded it neatly on the chair, and sat
down at my desk.
The letter from Kael, still in my drawer, stared at me.
He had been kind. Gentle. Helpful. Maybe not perfect–but honest.
I had used him tonight. For what? To make a man jealous?
I pulled out a sheet of paper and began writing.
Kael,
I’m sorry.
What I did tonight–it was cruel. I kissed you for the wrong reasons. I was hurt, confused, and angry. You didn’t deserve to be caught in the middle of something that had nothing to do with you.
You were kind to me when you didn’t have to be. And I ruined that.
If you want to hate me, I won’t blame you. I hate myself too.

But please… stay safe.
You’re all I have left that still makes sense.
-Serene.
The Raven came just before dawn. I tied the note to its leg, whispered
his name, and let it fly into the fading night.
By morning, I felt hollow.
I didn’t hear Damian all night. Maybe he stayed in his office. Maybe
he was thinking about everything, too.
The sun filtered in through the curtains. I slipped into something
and simple–an oversized sweater and leggings. I padded barefoot
downstairs, the warmth of the wooden floors grounding me.
The house was quiet. Empty. Mira wasn’t here anymore. The staff
didn’t speak unless spoken to.
I made tea, holding the cup tightly with both hands, then walked to
the living room and turned on the TV for background noise.
The channel flickered to life. A news anchor’s voice filled the room.

Chapter 83
“-breaking news this morning. A man in his early thirties was found
dead last night in a secluded house in the northern woods. The body
was discovered by an anonymous tipster, and authorities are
currently investigating the scene.”
I didn’t react at first.
Until they showed the image.
The photo was a little grainy. But the eyes. The jawline. The half-
smile.
No.
No.
“The man has been identified as Kael Everen, a private researcher and informant with ties to several underground political circles. Sources say the murder was clean, calculated, and without witnesses.”
My hands trembled.
