Chapter 89
Serene’s POV
The moment Naia told me I got the job, I swear I forgot how to
breathe.
“A personal assistant at Draven’s Enterprise?” I repeated slowly,
blinking at her like she just told me I won the lottery. “Naia, I don’t
even have a degree. The last job I had was being traumatized in the
woods.”
Naia rolled her eyes and tossed a bag of chips into my lap. “Girl,
please. You’re smart, presentable, and desperate–just their type.”
I stared at her. “Desperate?!”
She smirked. “I mean it with love.”
I couldn’t even argue. She wasn’t wrong. I was desperate. And
terrified. And still unsure how my name ended up in the inbox of one
of the most powerful companies in the city. But somehow, it did. And
they wanted me to start on Monday.
So, naturally, what did we do next?

A shopping spree, of course.
We hit every store that didn’t glare at us for looking like we only
came in to use their air conditioning. And honestly? I hadn’t felt this
girlie in forever. For a few hours, we forgot about stress and reality
and just played dress–up like we were sixteen again. I tried on
blouses, business suits, and enough heels to snap my ankles in thirty
different ways. Naia was like a personal stylist from heaven–or hell-
depending on how tight the pencil skirts were.
Eventually, we found the outfit.
A cream blouse with delicate pleats down the front, tucked into a
high–waisted black skirt that hugged my waist and flared just enough
at the knees to look expensive. Naia picked out nude heels for me-
four inches tall, sleek, and silently threatening my balance. I added
gold hoop earrings, a small black handbag, and red lipstick I never
would’ve chosen on my own.
When I looked at myself in the mirror, I actually gasped.
“I look like someone who knows how to schedule meetings,” I
whispered.
“You look like a hot secretary in a drama,” Naia said proudly. “This is
it, babe. First impression? Nailed.”

Chapter 89
That night, I didn’t sleep much. My mind kept spinning with thoughts
of what could go wrong. What if they made a mistake? What if I show
up and they laugh in my face?
But morning came, and with it–my first day.
I woke up two hours early. Curled my hair. Did my makeup carefully, one brushstroke at a time. I had never worn this much eyeliner in my life, but Naia said it gave me“”mystery eyes,” whatever that meant.
Getting to the office was… an event.
Draven’s Enterprise towered above the city, a skyscraper made of glass and steel. It looked like something out of a futuristic movie. My little car felt completely out of place parked three blocks away, but there was no way I was pulling into the valet in that thing. I power- walked through the morning crowd, praying I wouldn’t sweat through my blouse before I even got to the front door.
As I stepped into the building, everything hit me at once.
The marble floors. The giant digital screen behind the front desk. The waterfall in the middle of the lobby. I paused just to take it all in. Everyone around me looked like they’d stepped straight out of a fashion magazine. Suits, high heels, sleek hair, expensive watches.

I felt like a complete outsider.
Trying to hold onto the tiny bit of confidence I had left, I walked up
to the front desk and cleared my throat.
“H–hi. I’m Serene Evernight. I’m supposed to start today… as a
personal assistant?”
The receptionist looked up with the most flawless skin I’d ever seen.
She gave me a polite smile and typed something into her computer.
“You’re expected. Take the elevator to the twenty–fifth floor.
Someone will meet you there.”
“Thank you,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
I turned toward the elevators, gripping my handbag like it was my
emotional support animal. As the elevator moved upward, I tried to
breathe, but my stomach wouldn’t stop flipping.
Ding.
The doors opened to reveal the twenty–fifth floor, which was
somehow more intimidating than the lobby. It was black and gold
everywhere–glass walls, modern furniture, the constant sound of
phones ringing and people talking in hushed tones. Everyone moved

with purpose, like they knew exactly what they were doing.
And me? I didn’t even know where to stand.
Before I could panic too hard, a tall woman walked toward me. She
was dressed in a fitted black suit, her dark brown hair pulled back
into a sleek bun. Her heels made no sound when she walked.
“You must be Serene,” she said, her voice smooth and direct.
“Yes,” I said quickly, standing straighter.
“I’m Camille. I’ll be showing you around today before you meet Mr.
Vale. Follow me.”
She didn’t wait for a reply–just turned and walked. I scrambled after
her, trying not to trip over my own feet.
As we moved through the office, she spoke fast and expected me to
keep up.
“You’ll be working under Mr. Marcus Vale, the acting CEO while Mr.
Draven is overseas. Your tasks include managing schedules, prepping
reports, handling internal communication, and maintaining
confidentiality.”

I nodded like I understood every word.
“You’ll also assist me as needed, especially for high–priority
meetings.”
“Okay… sure.”
“And–very important–no gossip. We’re professionals here, not high
schoolers.”
Got it. No drama. No mistakes. No breathing, apparently.
She led me to a desk outside a set of dark wooden double doors-
Marcus Vale’s office. My desk was small, but sleek. Glass surface, fresh
notepads, a company laptop, and a little card that read “Welcome,
Serene” in gold cursive.
Camille didn’t seem like the “welcome card” type, but I smiled
anyway.
