Chapter 95
Writer’s POV
The diner wasn’t fancy.
In fact, it smelled like old coffee and ketchup packets, and the
waitress looked like she wanted to stab someone–but it was open,
and that was all that mattered.
Lucas sat across from Serene, who was poking her fries like they were
part of a science experiment.
“You’ve been quiet since we got here,” he said, sipping his water.
Serene blinked at him. “I’m just… thinking. This place smells like
grilled sadness.”
Lucas chuckled. “You picked it.”
“Don’t blame me. I’m emotionally unstable and hungry.”
Lucas raised a brow, amused. “Emotional instability and hunger.
Noted.”

Serene grinned, then flagged down the waitress and ordered a
margarita.
“Isn’t it a bit late for drinks?” he asked.
She shrugged. “I survived the day. I deserve tequila.”
Lucas said nothing. He just leaned back, eyes following her closely.
The margarita arrived. Then another. Then a third.
Somewhere between margarita number two and a side of onion rings,
Serene’s tongue loosened like a drawstring bag.
“You know what’s funny?” she said, slurring just slightly. “People
always talk about being powerful. Royals. Wolves. Packs.”
Lucas nodded, though she wasn’t really waiting for a response.
“But you know what sucks?” she leaned in, eyes wide. “Being born
into a royal pack and still being the weak one.”
Lucas frowned slightly, setting his fork down. “What do you mean?”
She waved a fry dramatically. “When I was eleven, my dad took everyone on this big trip–like, a spiritual forest thing, you know?

Everyone was supposed to shift under the full moon. Like… some
coming–of–age tradition. And guess what?”
“What?”
“I didn’t shift.” She popped the fry into her mouth and chewed sadly.
“Everyone else did. My cousins, my baby–faced beta friend, even the
twins with the weird ears. And me? I just stood there… human.
Naked. Confused.”
Lucas blinked, unsure if he should laugh or comfort her.
“Wolves howling, people celebrating. And I’m standing there like a
broken light switch.” She paused, eyes glassy. “My dad said it was
okay, that I was ‘special‘… but I saw his face. He was disappointed.”
Lucas leaned forward, his voice softer. “I’m sure he loved you.”
“He did,” she mumbled. “He’s gone now.”
Silence.
The only sound was the low hum of a dishwasher in the kitchen and
Serene sucking the last bits of her drink through a straw like it held
the secrets of the universe.

Lucas cleared his throat. “Maybe we should get you home.”
“I’m fine,” she said, throwing her hands up. “Let’s get pancakes!”
“You just had onion rings.”
“And they were emotionally supportive!”
He laughed then–really laughed–and stood up. “Come on. What’s
your address?”
Serene blinked slowly. “Um… 43… No. Wait. 23 Bloop Street.”
“Bloop Street?”
“Yes,” she said seriously. “Very exclusive. Fancy.”
Lucas sighed. “Serene.”
“Fine. 12 Emerald Hill. Or was it Emerald Hole? Emerald…
something.”
Lucas rubbed his forehead.
Ten minutes later, they were in his car, GPS rerouting every three

blocks thanks to Serene’s wild guesses.
“I think I saw this building before,” she said, head lolling to the side.
“Maybe I live there.”
“That’s a hospital.”
“Oh. That explains the smell.”
Lucas turned the wheel calmly. “Serene. Try again.”
“Fine. I live in Naia’s house. With the pink door. And the cat that
hates me.”
Victory at last.
When they pulled into the driveway, Serene sat up. “That’s it! The
place with the angry lawn gnome!”
Lucas helped her out of the car. She tripped over her own feet,
giggling as he steadied her with one arm.
The front door flew open.
Naia stood there in a robe, hair in a pineapple bun, holding a toothbrush like a weapon. Her face went from sleepy to horrified in

three seconds.
“Serene?! Who is this? Why do you smell like tequila and sorrow?”
Serene pointed dramatically. “That’s Lucas! He’s my boss. But not the
scary kind. He’s like… wolf–shaped calm bread.”
Lucas gave a polite nod. “Hi.”
Naia narrowed her eyes. “You brought her home drunk?”
“I tried to stop at margarita two,” Lucas said, holding his hands up
like a hostage.
“She’s a lightweight!”
“I noticed.”
Naia marched down the steps and took Serene by the arm. “Come inside before you embarrass yourself further.”
“I already told him about the naked forest incident,” Serene said
proudly.
Naia paused, blinked, then dragged her inside. “We are never
speaking of this again.”

Lucas followed awkwardly into the hallway, not sure whether to leave
or stay.
Serene turned around, eyes wide. “Lucas, did I tell you about the time
I tried to bite a squirrel because I thought it had magic powers?”
Naia wheeled around. “That’s enough story time! Go to bed!”
“But I’m full of thoughts!” Serene declared.
“You’re full of tequila,” Naia muttered.
Lucas leaned against the doorframe. “Should I call tomorrow to check
in?”
Naia looked at him, then softened slightly. “Yeah. That’d be nice.
She’s a bit… fragile.”
He nodded. “I’ll see myself out.”
As he reached the door, Serene’s voice echoed behind him. “Lucas?”
He turned.
“Thanks for the fries.”

He smiled. “Anytime.”
The door clicked shut behind him.
Inside, Naia guided Serene to her room.
“Do you want water?”
“I want to fight the moon.”
Naia sighed. “That’s a no.”
As she pulled the covers over her best friend, Serene mumbled one
last thought.
“Naia… do you think he’s a good guy?”
“Who? Lucas?”
Serene nodded against the pillow.
Naia thought for a moment. “He didn’t run when you started talking
about magical squirrels. That’s something.”
Serene smiled in her sleep.

Naia stood there a minute longer, arms crossed, then tiptoed out.
And in the stillness of the night, with the sound of crickets outside
and city lights far away, Serene drifted into dreams that smelled
faintly of onion rings, moonlight, and whatever Lucas wore that made
him smell like the woods after a storm.
