Chapter 148
“You can see my bank accounUS?”
He laughed. “I can see everything, sugarbaby. Talk to you soon.”
He hung up, and I thought I might be sick.
Because of how he talked to me. Because of how much I owed him.
I had more bills than income coming in. William had offered to help me, and Jason had too. But I didn’t want to depend on anyone but myself.
No one else was trustworthy enough.
But… with all these bills… if something didn’t break soon, I was afraid I would.
For now, I tried to focus on the present. My daughter was still unconscious, but on the mend. With Jason’s help, she would recover in time.
If I kept the positives in sight…
If I didn’t give in to despair…
I stayed with Ava overnight, and the next morning went to work, ready to work as hard as I could to generate new contracts. They might not be as profitable as the one I had brokered with Jason, and many of our shared connections were wary of me since Jason had backed out.
But surely someone would want to help!
I got off the elevator and stepped into the office and froze.
Jason was standing in front of Claire’s desk, talking with her. They were both smiling. Things weren’t tense at all.
I approached, cautious. Anxious.
Jason turned and saw me, his smile never wavering.
“There she is,” Claire said.
“There you are,” Jason said.
“Here I am,” I said, approaching. “What’s going on? What are you doing here?”
“Fixing things that never should have been broken,” Jason said. “I want to reestablish our contract, Vanessa. And I’ve spoken to the other entrepreneurs too. Everyone’s back on for our joint agreement.”
My breath caught in my throat. This would take some of the pressure off of me for money. At least for now. And since it was related to work, my pride would be safe.
“Looks like I owe you another one,” I said.
Jason lightly shook his head. “You owe me nothing,” he said. “I’m not doing anything I wouldn’t want to do even without your gratitude.”
Looking at him, my heart ached. He truly had changed from the younger man who had turned his back on me for Brittany. Now, he was a man, strong and noble. It was difficult not to see him in a brighter light, like he’d earned a little halo in our time apart.
I didn’t know what to think or had to act. All I could do was say, “Thank you.”
“Don’t take this too personally. My pack was making a substantial profit from these contracts. I’d have to be foolish not to return to them,” he said, but the softness in his voice told me this wasn’t entirely a self–serving decision.

I had no idea what I was going to tell William. Hopefully he would understand.
As for Jason…
