Chapter 331
To learn the full truth, I was will to move to a private location, even if there was danger away from a crowd. Jason looked at me, waiting for my answer. He was deferring to me on this, and I knew he would follow my lead, whatever I wanted to do here.
I was so grateful for him.
“I’d like to speak more about this,” I said.
Richard nodded curtly. “Follow me.” He started back toward the palace, veering down a different pathway than the main one that would lead us back to the ballroom. Instead, we were headed to some unknown side room. Part of the way there, he barked, “Larry. With us.”
Retired healer Larry stumbled out of the crowd, coming toward us. “At once, Alpha.” He gave me a tight–lipped smile, sympathy in his eyes.
Together, we went forward into the house. The side path led us into a smaller sitting room, with a couch, love seat, and a few chairs all around a coffee table. A bookshelf was along one wall, though it held more knickknacks than books. A door to the hallway was opened before a servant leaned in and closed it.
“Sit,” Richard said, gesturing to one of the chairs.
Jason, with his hand on the small of my back led me to the chair. I chose to sit. Jason, stand. He moved protectively behind my chair, watching the room.
Richard looked at Larry. “I want her tested.”
“I’ll get my bag,” Larry said and stepped out of the room.
“Tested for what?” Jason asked.
“We can test her blood to determine if she has any Lycan pack blood,” Richard replied. “The test is instant. Before any conjecture is made, before any decisions need to be come to, we can have our answers.” He glanced at me. “I presume that you consent?”
“I do,” I said.
Larry returned quickly, his medical bag in hand. In the room, he lowered the bag onto the table, then pulled out a vial with a small amount of clear liquid in it, as well as a sealed needle.
“I’ll need just a drop or two of your blood, young lady,” Larry said.
“It’s okay,” I said. “I understand.
I held out my arm as he came over to me. He peered at my vein, then raised the needle.
“You’ll feel a pinch,” he said.
It was a credit to his skills as a healer that I barely felt anything at all. The blood drawing was over very quickly, and Larry, holding the needle of my blood returned to the vial. He punctured the top of the vial with the needle.
“If you contain any Lycan pack blood, it will react to the concentrate in the vial,” Larry said. “The red blood will immediately
turn purple.”
Slowly, he pushed down on the needle, forcing a drop of blood back out through it. The blood droplet gathered at the tip of the needle before dropping down.
I held my breath, watching the blood droplet fall.
Jason’s hand tightened on my shoulder, his grip tight.
The blood hit the liquid, and immediately the vial burst into color. A beautiful and vibrant purple.
“Test it again,” Richard Said “This could have been a fluke.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Larry said. He replaced his instruments with clean ones, a new needle, a new vial. “Let’s try the other arm, shall we?” he asked me.
I held out my other arm and he drew the blood.
Returning to the table, he pushed a drop of my blood into the second vial. This one too immediately changed to a purple color. “There’s no mistake, Alpha,” Larry said. “She is one of us.”
My heart raced. I had wanted to know where I was from for so long, but now that I knew, I was unsure how to feel.
Especially with Richard glowering at me.
