Chapter 332
Laila’s POV
“We need to test her lineage,” Richard said.
“Yes, Alpha,” Larry said, and moved to preserve the rest of the blood he had taken from me.
“Out there, we heard people talk of a lost princess,” I said. I didn’t want to presume that I could be that princess. I had no desire to be anyone of importance. I only wanted to know the truth. “Who is that?”
“My lost niece,” Richard said. “Daughter of my deceased brother, who had once been the Alpha of this pack, before the tragic rogue attack that tore our pack apart.”
“Testing will take at least a day,” Larry said. “I’ll have to go to the lab.”
“Do it,” Richard said.
Larry placed all of his supplies in his medical bag, then gathered his bag, nodded at the Alpha, then to me and Jason, and walked out of the door.
He left the door opened. A servant immediately reached in and closed the door.
Richard turned his back on us. Walking toward to the window, he stared outside for a while.
Glancing behind me, I looked up at Jason. His jaw was locked, a hand on each of my shoulders. He seemed even more apprehensive than me, and I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles. Anything could happen, Richard could handle this news in any sort of way.
I didn’t think I could be his lost niece, but if I was, that made us family. Turning away from us like he was, he clearly needed a minute to process those feelings. Had he cared for his niece? Had he buried all hope of her returning to him? And now that I was here, possibly her, did that bring those old feelings back from the past?
Without knowing him, I could presume to see into his mind. So far, he hadn’t treated us very kindly, but I imagined my being pack changed things. At least, I hoped it would. So far, he had only frowned at me.
I wanted a home, a place to belong. If he would cast me out, denying me a place here, even after it having been proven that I belonged, I didn’t know what I would do.
I held my breath, my heart racing, when Richard finally turned around.
His face, when I could see it, had changed from before. Gone was the tough as nails persona. Instead, he was smiling, his eyes bright.
“Laila, was it?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said.
“Forgive my earlier behavior, Laila,” he said, stepping closer. “So often, we get people trying to sabotage us, to infiltrate into our pack and steal our medical advances, or worse. Attempts have been made on my life many times. I tried to be courteous given your relationship with another Alpha, but it is always difficult to be trustful.”
“I understand,” I said.
He lifted his gaze to Jason behind me. “And to you, Jason. I owe you an apology as well. I disrespected you by mistrusting a fellow Alpha.
“You had your reasons,” Jason said. “I just hope we can be cordial now.”
“I hope for that as well,” Richard said. “Especially since you, Laila, may be my precious niece.”
