‘All of these were things that I wanted. Things that I had only read about in books or seen in movies. Things I so dearly wanted. “I’m sorry that I made you feel unwelcomed, Laila,” Richard said. “You belong here.”

“Thank you,” I said. “Jason, too?”

Richard’s smile tightened for a moment. “If that is your wish…”

“It is.”

“Then, yes. Him too,” Richard said. “We have so much to catch up on. I must tell you about your parents. They are heroes, you know. And… you will need the cure.”

“The wolfsbane cure? You are saying it exists?” I asked. I had already suspected, having talked to Larry. But having it confirmed now with the actual Alpha was more than mere guessing.

“Yes, it exists, but it is rare,” Richard said. “If you are truly my niece though, we will make sure that you and your daughter are on the top of the list to receive the next available dosage.”

“Thank you, Alpha,” I said, unable to hold my own smile now.

“Please,” Richard said. “Call me Uncle.”

“Uncle,” I said, though it felt strange. “Can you tell me more about… my parents?”

He nodded. “They were so brave. They fought to hold off the first attack, the one that triggered the war. Your father and mother both valiantly tried to defend the pack house, and all the children within. They fell to the rogues, but the children were able to escape, you among them. Though, as you were targeted too, the rogues chased you into the woods.”

I lowered my head. I didn’t yet know if this couple were my parents, but even so, these two people who had died so bravely still deserved respect.

“They were good people,” he said. “And I see a lot of them in you.”

“Thank you,” I said.

“You must be tired,” Richard said. “This was a lot to take in.”

“Yes,” Jason said, coming closer. “We should return to the hotel.”

“Nonsense. I won’t hear of it,” Richard said. “You aren’t just pack, you are family. And family stays here. I will send servants to gather your things, but you will stay here.”

“Thank you,” I said, “But that’s not necessary –”

“I insist,” Richard said. “Family needs to stay together. And… well, I won’t trouble you with anything now, but there are new dangers against you, if you truly are my niece. It’s best for you to stay here where you can be protected.”

“I can protect her,” Jason said.

“You’ve done an admirable job until now,” Richard said. “But she will be a princess, Alpha Jason. I’m not sure even you know the dangers she will now face.”

“I don’t –”

“As the Alpha of this pack,” Richard said, some edge sliding into his voice now, “I am asking you to stay. This isn’t just a curtesy, it is a gift. You wouldn’t refuse such a gift, would you?”

Jason and I looked at each other. His face was hard. My stomach sunk a little.

“No,” I said. “Thank you for allowing us.”

Richard dismissed us shortly after that. I took Jason’s hand and we followed a servant up to the second floor, where a series of bedrooms lined either side of a long hallway. We were shown to one of them.

As soon as we entered, I felt so overwhelmed, I didn’t know what to do. Fortunately, Jason had a better idea, and pulled me into

his arms.

“We’ll figure this out,” he said.
