Chapter 334
Jason’s POV
The note chilled my blood until had ice in my veins. It supplied no signature or other means of identifying who had written it, though the list of possible candidates was somewhat slim. It had to be someone who knew we were staying, who had heard some or part of our conversation with Richard, and who had access to the second floor of the palace. All of the guests had been confined to the first floor, ballroom area.
It could have been a servant, maybe, though most of them didn’t seem predisposed to help us in any capacity. It could have been Larry, who had always acted like he wanted to help us, but he had already left to take Laila’s blood to the hospital.
Laila continued to peer at the letter, reading it again and again, before checking all sides for any other message. I’d already confirmed there was nothing else there.
Richard’s insistence that we stay here already had me on edge. He had said Laila was in danger now, but wouldn’t give proper explanation. And I didn’t care for his implication that I couldn’t protect her properly. I was Alpha, and as such, would happily give my life for my family, of which Laila was a centerpiece.
Just then, I heard a soft and subtle click coming from the door. It had been so slight that Laila hadn’t noticed, but my Alpha senses often picked up on things that others couldn’t hear.
I walked to the door, placed my hand on the knob, and lightly tried to turn it. As I suspected, the door knob didn’t as much as budge. That clicking had been a lock, and now Laila and I were locked into this room. Trapped.
What sort of place treated their honored guests like prisoners?
“What is it?” Laila asked.
“Nothing,” I said at once.
Her face was already crinkled with worry, I wouldn’t add to it. Besides, a closed door wouldn’t stop me in an emergency. I’d bust a hole through the wall if I had to, to get us out of here. For now, I’d allow this, but I’d be watching. My wolf was already on high alert, and I doubted that would change until we had Laila safely back on home pack lands.
“We should rest while we can,” I said. Moving to her, I gently took the note from her hands, folded it up, and put it into my pocket. “Our bags should be here soon.”
“I don’t know if I can sleep at all after what just happened,” she said, but I could already see the exhaustion pulling on her frame.
“I’ll protect you,” I told her.

She looked at me for a long moment. I held her gaze, uncertain if she was gauging my strength or my dedication to her. I would not fail in either capacity. After a moment, she allowed herself to slump.
“Our luggage isn’t here yet,” she said.
“I’ll stay up for it,” Jason said.
“Let me know when it’s here, if I’m asleep,” she said, “I really don’t want to sleep in my dress.”
“You don’t have to,” I told her, and glanced down without meaning to, my mind immediately filling with images of her naked and writhing beneath me.
She blushed fiercely, all the way down her neck and chest, then shook her head. “Not here,” she whispered.
Reluctantly, I agreed. While I wanted to have her everywhere, I needed to stay alert of our surroundings, and she was incredibly distracting. While we were here, while she was unsafe, I needed to keep all of my focus on her protection.
