The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 335

Chapter 335

Gently, I roused Laila, we changed, and this time, I laid in the bed with her. She curled into me, resting her head on my chest. I clutched her close, but all night, I kept my eyes on the door.

The next morning, while Laila used the on suite bathroom, I checked the door again. Unlocked.

So it was only at night, they intended to keep us confined. Curious.

Laila stepped out of the bathroom, showered and changed.

“Your turn,” she said.

“Wait here,” I told her, pushing just enough Alpha tone into my voice for her to know I was serious. She sat down and waited on the edge of the bed while I took the quickest shower of my life. I was back at her side in under five minutes. My hair was damp,

my clothes applied hastily.

Laila looked at me with curiosity but didn’t say anything.

I gave her my arm, and together we walked down to breakfast.

I felt eyes on us from every direction. The servants perhaps. But whenever I turned, the servants hurried away. Even not catching anyone in the act, however, I knew we were being watched.

We walked down the stairs, where a butler directed us to a breakfast dining room. There, Richard was already dining with a few guests we had met during the previous brunch, members of his council,

“Welcome,” Richard said, and gestured for us to sit near him. The two men who had been sitting where he gestured immediately stood, grabbed their plates and drinks and moved. The moment Laila and I sat down in those seats instead, servants were there, replacing the missing plates, cups, and silverware.

As breakfast was placed onto Laila’s plate, my suspicions soared,

Don’t trust Richard.

Richard, who was presently looking too closely at Laila.

Grabbing my fork, I leaned over and scooped some of Laila’s eggs and put them into my mouth. She lifted a brow, glancing at me. Richard’s eyes narrowed as he did the same.

I chewed and swallowed, detecting no poison.

“I just wanted to make sure yours were the right temperature,” I lied. “Mine are a bit cold.”

Lowly, Laila said, “You haven’t even tried your own yet.”

“Alpha Jason,” Richard said. He smiled, but it was on the wrong side of friendly. “Don’t tell me you were checking for poison?” He laughed lightly, but it was controlled and ended in an instant. “Do you truly think the service here so inhospitable that we would try to kill you?”

“Of course not,” I lied, though at this point, I didn’t care if he knew that it was a lie. I didn’t trust him, and if he knew that, all the better. This was a way of telling him that I was watching him without actually using those words. “I was merely checking the temperature, as I said. Though I should tell you, you might want to have your guest room rooms checked out. I swear I heard a malfunction in ours last night, which seemed to lock the door from the outside. Surely, that was not intentional.”

Richard’s brow lowered.

Laila glanced between us, before telling Richard, “The hospitality here has been amazing. Thank you so much for taking us in We received our luggage very quickly last night.”

Richard pulled his gaze away from me to consider Laila. His features softened at once, though I couldn’t read if it was a genuine

change or all an act to deceive her into lowering her guard.

My guard would not be lowered either way.

“I’m glad,” Richard said. “And the food is to your liking?”

Laila hastily had a bite. “Delicious.”
