The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 336

Chapter 336

Laila’s POV

I kept my composure in front of Richard, not wanting to indicate to him that I had any opinions on moving here, one way or another. Through Jason’s tension, though, I could sense his panic. He’d been acting protective since even before that note arrived, but testing my eggs for poison was the most obvious he could have possibly been about it. In front of Richard, too.

I wasn’t angry, but I was a little annoyed that Jason thought I wasn’t also being cautious. Maybe I was letting my desperation to have my own family history cloud my vision somewhat, but even I could see that Richard wasn’t being entirely genuine with us. And there was the note to consider.

Yet I couldn’t clear this up with Jason in front of Richard. For the rest of the meal, I was cordial to Richard and his other guests, while Jason quietly seethed beside me.

Finally, when the meal was done, I tugged on Jason’s arm. “If you will excuse us,” I said, “I’ve been dying to have a better look at the gardens.”

Richard smiled. “I hope they are to your liking.”

“I’m sure they will be, thank you,” I said, and tugged Jason to the door.

In the hallway, the same butler that had directed us to the dining room, now showed us how to reach the gardens. As we headed outside, he stayed at the door, watchful. He likely had been assigned to follow us, to ensure we didn’t get lost, on accident or on

purpose.

I pulled Jason deeper into the gardens, where I felt that we could be alone.

“You are being too obvious,” I said, when we were surrounded only by hydrangea bushes and daisies.

“He needed to know that I’m watching,” Jason said, unapologetic. “He thinks he can get away with his tricks under the guise of being a good host, but I won’t allow it.”

“Jason…” He appeared beyond reason.

“I don’t trust him, Laila. And neither should you.”

“I don’t trust him fully,” I said. “But he could be family. And please don’t forget our true purpose here. We need that wolfsbane

cure for Ava.”

“And for you,” he said. “I haven’t forgotten. But there is something going on here, more than meets the eye, and it has my wolf and I on edge.”

“Couldn’t that be just because you are away from your own pack lands?” I asked.

“Maybe,” he said, but didn’t seem convinced. After a moment’s pause, he asked, “Do you want to move here?”

“What?” I asked, startled by the abrupt switch in topic.

“He offered. If the results come back positive, if you are their lost princess… would you want to live here?”

“I… don’t know,” I said, “I hadn’t really considered it. If we are Richard’s family, then maybe, even after receiving the cure, Ava might be safer here, protected…”

Jason tensed, his hands clenching into fists.

“But I’m not in any hurry to move,” I told him quickly. “And I won’t give much thought to even considering it until we know the truth of my lineage. Truly, my greatest relief is in simply knowing where I’m from. And if those two heroes are my parents, I would be proud of it.”

“If what he said is the truth,” Jason said.
