The Alpha's Unclaimed Mate (Jason and Laila) by Caroline Above Story novel Chapter 337

Chapter 337

“He could have been trying to soften the blow,” I said. “To make my possible parents more brave than they had been.”

“Maybe,” Jason said. A muscle teked in the corner of his jaw.

“Well, I want to know the truth,” I said.

“Richard won’t tell us, not even if you ask him without me,” Jason said. “…which I wouldn’t allow anyway. I am staying at your side like glue for as long as we are in these pack lands.”

“We can try to search for a library, or some kind of records room,” I said. “If we found some sort of physical evidence, we could confront Richard and maybe he would tell the truth.”

Jason nodded, though his expression remained skeptical.

“Maybe we could find someone old enough to have been here when it happened. A servant, maybe?” I said.

Jason’s face turned even more grim.

“Have you noticed something about all the servants?” he asked me.

“No…?” I asked.

“They are all young. Even our butler follower.” He nodded back toward the door. “Only Larry and some of the council would have been old enough, but they are so far under Richard’s thumb, I doubt they would tell us anything.”

Now that he mentioned it, I thought back and realized he was right. All of the servants had been young, my age or less, far too young to have been working at the palace at the time of the murder, or even the subsequent civil war.

This brought a new question… what happened to all the older servants?

The Moon Ridge pack, for instance, employed the same servants at the pack house since even I had been there. They seemed to pride themselves in their servant dedication and loyalty, even keeping on elderly servants with lighter tasks, if only to give them something to do in their retirement age.

I could see now that maybe Jason’s obvious distrust was warranted. There was definitely something suspicious going on around here. Whether Richard was involved or not remained to be seen. I was willing to believe he was trying to keep me from the darker moments of the pack’s past. But until the truth was fully known, Jason wouldn’t offer the same curtesy.

“I suppose, until we know the truth, none of this matters,” I said. “If they aren’t my parents, we will get on the waitlist for the

cure and return home.”

Jason nodded. “I can’t wait to get you away from this place.”

We wondered the palace for a bit, in the places we were allowed to go under the butler’s ever present eye. When I asked about a library, he said he would have to clear permission first with the Alpha. Perhaps at a later date, he would allow us.

I frowned, wondering if evidence would be removed in that time.

Later, we were summoned to a sitting room where we found Richard and Larry, back from the lab. He was holding an envelopè which he handed to Richard.

“The results,” Larry said.

“Come in. Sit down,” Richard said to Jason and to me. “Isn’t it past time to learn who you are, Laila?”

With his hand on the small of my back, Jason led me to the two-person love seat opposite of Richard, nearer to Larry. We both

sat.

I leaned forward, on edge, eager for the results. Jason kept his hand on my back in silent support.

Richard opened the envelope and pulled out the single sheet of paper from inside.

Scanning through, he stopped near the end, then lifted his gaze to me.

I held my breath.
