Chapter 338
Laila’s POV
The words stole my breath away, and for a long moment, I just sat there, totally unable to process what I’d just hurt. What the report said. What must be real but felt like some kind of fantasy. Even when it had been a possibility, I hadn’t truly considered it. It had been enough just to know I belonged somewhere.
Now I was some kind of princess? It seemed too good to be true.
But Richard was looking at me with new hope and affection. This didn’t feel like a lie. Instead, it felt like everything was finally sliding into place, the way it should have been from the start.
Jason reached over and clasped my hand in his. I held on as tightly as I could.
“It’s good to have you back,” Richard said. “To finally know you are safe after all these years is a relief that I cannot properly express. I know we just met, but I hope that we will grow closer. Someday, I hope you will look at me and see family. See and know your uncle, as I see and know you as my niece.”
“I’d like that,” I said, my voice shaky. “I… This is all such a shock.”
“Yes, I imagine it must be. To go from being an orphan to discovering something like this,” Richard said. ” But we have all the time in the world now to become a family again.” He sighed, smiling. “Finally, my brother’s spirit may rest in peace, now that you are safe.”
“I wish I could have known them,” I said.
“You will learn about them,” Richard said. “We will keep their memory alive. Ah, Lillian. Your future is so bright now, and there is so much we must do.” He clapped his hands together. “First, the pack must be alerted. We should hold an event to reintroduce you to the pack members.” 1
“I don’t know if we need to go to all that trouble,” I said. “I never intended to

“Nonsense. The return of the lost princess is something to be celebrated, and will please many members of the pack. The symbolism will be inspiring, marking a true end to the rebellion that took so much from us. Now, with the princess back, we can show the pack that we are truly healed.”
I was still coming to terms with being a princess, and now Richard wanted me to be some kind of symbol of hope for his people too? This was moving too fast, and I couldn’t lose sight of what was really important to me, the true reason that I came here.
“Really, I just need access to the wolfsbane cure,” I said.
“And you will have it,” Richard said. “I will make the appropriate calls at once. And your daughter – Ava, was it? She should be brought here at once so that she can receive the proper medical care.”
“Ava is not coming here,” Jason said at once. “We can deliver the cure to her.”
“The cure cannot and will not leave pack borders,” Richard said. As he addressed Jason, some of his good humor sobered. “If the cure is to be administered, then Ava must be brought here.”

“That’s not happening,” Jason said firmly.
“You would condemn your child to suffer the effects of wolfsbane poison for the rest of her life?” Richard asked.
“Or you could make an exception for family,” Jason insisted.
“My pack has safely preserved this cure for many years –”
“Hoarded it, you mean. Keeping it from people it could actually help –”
“The pack comes first. There isn’t enough to share
“You don’t make enough –”
”
“Stop this. Please,” I said, hoping to end the argument.
Both men continued to glare at each other, but thankfully listened.
“We can discuss this later,” Richard said. “But I will not budge on my decision.”
