“I’m feeling very tired,” I said. “I’d like to take a minute to recover.”

“Of course,” Richard said.

“I’ll help you to the room,” Jason said, standing.

I allowed Jason to help pull me to my feet, my eyes still on Larry. “Doctor, would you be willing to come as well. I think I might need a relaxer.”

“I should be able to, I…” He looked at Richard, who subtly nodded. “Yes. Yes, I will help.”

Jason gave me a quizzical glance, but didn’t say anything as we stepped into the hallway, Larry with us, leaving Richard behind in the sitting room. Not wanting Richard to overhear, I waited until we had gone up the stairs and were nearly to our room before I addressed Larry.

“I was wondering if you could tell me more about my parents.”

“I imagine you must be curious,” Larry said, shaking his head. “I’ll tell you what I can, though I didn’t know them personally.”

“You didn’t?” I asked. “I have to be honest, doctor, I’m most curious about how they passed. And how I disappeared.”

“I wasn’t here at that time,” Larry said, without looking at me. I couldn’t tell if he was being honest or not, but I felt like he was hiding something from me. “I can only tell you what I heard.”

“I’m guessing what you heard will match what we were told, as well,” Jason said. “We were hoping for a more personal account.”

“You’ll struggle to find one,” Larry said. “Most of the people who were here at the time of the murder have all left or passed away. There’s only one woman who remains, but she’s lost to madness. You can’t trust what she says.”

“Who is the woman?” I asked.

“She’s only known as Delta now,” Larry said. “She must have been someone important at one time, for the Alpha to be willing to keep her on, especially in her state. But whoever she was, I couldn’t tell you a single person who would know it. Other than the Alpha himself, of course.”

“I think I saw her once,” I said. “She lives here at the palace?”

“She does.”

I traded glances with Jason, and could tell that he was thinking the same as I was.

Richard knew the full truth, but he would never be inclined to share it with me. If we wanted to learn what really went on at that time, we needed a different source, even if, in the end, that source simply reinforced Richard’s story.

“I’m sorry I can’t tell you anything more,” Larry said. “You have a right to know about your parents and yourself. But… one thing to consider. A word of caution. Perhaps that past has been lost for a reason. Those years were vicious and dark. Some things should be left in the past.”

“With respect, doctor,” I said. “I just want to know the truth.”

“Then be careful,” he said. “Because there are many who want the past to stay buried, and there’s no telling what they will do to keep anyone from finding out.”

“Who?” I asked.

He paled slightly. “I already said too much.”

Recognizing his stress, I didn’t press, but internally, I vowed to not allow anyone to frighten me, to keep me from learning the truth about who I was and what had happened the night my parents died and I was

forced to flee.
