I narrowed my eyes at him. He still didn’t look at me.

After another few moments, he sighed. “I’m not helping things, am I? Laila is my dear niece, and for be worse, she cares about you. We really should try to come to some kind of agreement, a truce, for her sake

“For Laila’s sake, we can try,” I said, but I truly did not like the man. I didn’t know what he could possibl improve my opinion of him.

Richard grunted, and didn’t say any more.

My opinion of him only soured as the car pulled up in front of an expensive jewelry store and we exited. As entered the store, Richard didn’t even greet the staff, who bowed in his presence.

“What are you standing around for?” he snapped. “You knew I was coming. Where is the gift I ordered?”

“At once, Alpha,” said one of the staff members, a young woman, who quickly rushed to a counter. She kneeled down behind it, retrieving a small square velvet box and put it on the glass countertop.

“Don’t just stand there,” Richard grunted. “Open it.””

The young woman was flustered, likely because Richard was treating her like someone lesser-than, snapping at her for every wasted moment of his time. I’d seen him treat his servants this way too, ignoring them unless they were too slow, too imperfect, then lashing out at them.

The woman’s hands were shaking like she was afraid. The other employees were still bowing at the door, even though Richard had long moved passed them and wasn’t paying any attention to them.

The woman opened the box revealing a beautiful golden pendant on a tight chain. On the front of the pendant, diamonds were encrusted in the shape of a crescent moon. Flipping the pendant over showed a solid gold surface.

“I have purchased this for Laila,” Richard said to me. “The diamonds make it one of a kind, and incredibly expensive. Do you think she will like it?”

“Laila doesn’t flash her wealth or status,” I said. “She never had. She prefers simple, homemade things to jewelry and diamonds.”

Richard turned up her nose. “She probably turned away the things you bought her because they were too cheap- looking and she didn’t want to hurt your feelings. This will be different, I’m sure.”

“You brought me here for my opinion,” I said.

“I didn’t realize how useless it would be,” Richard snapped back.

A growl rose up in the back of my throat, but I bit it down. Whatever. Let him get what he wanted for Laila. She would be polite to his face, either way.

“All that she really wants is the cure,” I said.

“There will be time for that later,” Richard said, waving me off as he returned his attention to the necklace.” There’s just enough space on the back to be engraved. She should know she belongs to the Lycan pack now. Forever”

“What would you like it to say, Alpha?” the employee asked. She weaved her hands together in fro nervously fiddling her hands.

Richard thought a minute. I knew, by now, that he wasn’t going to ask me anything else, so I did thinking of an idea.

“Lycan’s Princess,” Richard said. “In life and in death.”

I snapped my attention to him.

He shrugged. “A poetic way of saying forever, don’t you think?”
