Laila’s POV

I ran to the door and threw the chair to the side. I opened the inside lock, then tried to turn the knob. budge. I checked the lock again, but the inside was definitely unlatched. With growing dread, I realiz I had been locked in from the outside.

Grabbing the knob with both hands now, I tried to open it more aggressively. It was definitely locked.

The door was warm. I knew I didn’t have much time to open it. A fire on the other side would spread o if the door became enflamed, I would never escape.

I had to get out, or I might die here. I could break the window, but I was too high up. The fall would be to try the door first.

I stepped back a second, took a few deep breaths, then plowed at the door with my shoulder, trying to b rattled on its hinges but didn’t break. My arm ached already.

“Come on,” I growled, trying to channel my wolf. She was mostly dormant inside of me, resting. “Wake we’re going to die!”

I reared back then charged the door a second time. The door creaked but still didn’t break.

“No!” I shouted in frustration. “I am not going to die here! I promised Jason. And Ava needs me!” I stepp again. “We are getting out of here. Come on!”

I roared as I ran toward the door. At the last moment, an inch before my shoulder reached it, I felt my wolf last. Her strength flooded through me, adding to my meager own. When I hit the door this time, it collapse my shoulder, landing flat on the floor.

Stumbling out into the hallway, I tripped over the door but steadied myself before I could fall. Blaring heat my immediate left, but that was the way to the stairs, the only escape I knew. I had to go that way. I had to t There was no other way out.

Smoke billowed across the ceiling. I kept myself low, trying not to breathe in too much as I rushed toward th stairs. What I saw made my heart sink.

The stairs were entirely engulfed in flames from the bottom stair to the top. Dark smoke made a wall, imposs to see through. The fire burned hot, searing my skin whenever I tried to get too close.

Covering my mouth with my elbow, I coughed. Despite my efforts, smoke was entering my lungs.

I turned around, rushing the other way. Maybe there was a servant’s entrance somewhere. A secret stairwell? I to try to look, but I didn’t even know where to start.

I kept my hands on the wall, pushing as I went, searching for a hollow breach, but I found nothing.

Too soon, I had inhaled too much smoke and collapsed down onto my knees.
