Laila’s POV

I gasped as I bolted upright. My hand reached for my neck, but it was heated. Blinking a few times, I found myself in a hospital room, in a hospital bed, with the blankets now pulling down in my lap.

So many thoughts ran through my mind all at once, like a whirlwind, and I could make sense of them all.

One thought became clear before all the rest. A yearning.

Jason.

I looked around, expecting to see him beside me. Instead, Richard was rising from the chair in the corner and approaching me. Jason wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

A sinking feeling of dread and apprehension filled me. Something very wrong was going on here, even if I didn’t fully understand it just yet.

Then I remembered.

Delta. My mother.

Dead.

My tears started before I could stop them, filling my eyes and spilling over down my cheeks.

Richard’s face was sympathetic. “Rest easy, niece. You had quite an ordeal, but you are safe now. No one will dare to hurt you again when I am with you.”

“The fire…” I croaked, my voice still scratchy and dry.

Richard moved to a side table where he poured a glass of water from a jug. He returned with the cup and pressed it into my hands. He didn’t let go right away, keeping his grip over mine as he said, “I promise you. Whoever started that fire will suffer for it. When I find them, I will make them pay.”

The fire had been traumatic, and I would need time to work through the terror I had felt in those moments. But that wasn’t what hurt me the most right now. “Delta saved me. Then your guards shot her with silver bullets.”

Richard’s face hardened ever-so-slightly. I kept my gaze strictly focused on him, watching for any and all reactions, hoping that I could parse together just how much he knew.

“They believed you were being taken,” Richard said. “Delta’s behavior was often confusing. She kept her distance from everyone. The guards had no reason to trust her.”

“Maybe they didn’t,” I said. “But you did. You should have told them that she is safe.”

He shook his head. “I had no way of knowing if that was true.”

I searched his face. He was a good actor, a good liar. If I hadn’t heard Delta call me her daughter in her final words, and known it in my heart to be true, I might have never known. Have never believed.

“She was my mother,” I said.

His gaze lifted to mine again, intense. “Who told you that?”

“She did.”

“You can’t believe her. She’s gone mad-

“I know it’s true,” I said. “I felt the connection. My wolf wouldn’t know to lie about something like that.

Richard paused. He took a breath. “Fine. Yes. She was your mother.”

“Why would you lie to me about that? I had suspected she was my mother before and you denied it?”

“1 only wanted to protect you from her madness,” Richard said. “She was never the same after my brother died and she lost you.” He sighed. “I was worried she would try to hurt you in some way. She might have even started the fire herself, to make herself appear like a hero in your eyes.”
