Chapter 360

I wondered now, if it had been her who had slipped that note under my door, warning me about Richard. Maybe I wasn’t safe, not even here in this hospital room.

That rush of fear had me yearning for my protector once more.

I looked around the room again. “Where’s Jason?

Richard glared. “You need to forget about him, Laila. He’s not good for you. More, he’s dangerous, to you and your child. Better that you put him out of your mind, and move you and your daughter into the palace permanently where you will be safe from him and his machinations.”

Jason’s POV

Groaning, I opened my eyes. I was lying flat on a concrete floor. Pushing myself up, all of my limbs ached, but I could feel them healing. The bump on my head was mostly just a light migraine now, but that was still enough to piss the off.

Pressing my hand to my chest, I reached out to Laila through our bond. Yes. There. I could feel her steady heartbeat. She was healing, stronger than she’d been before. I listened for a while, allowing that steady beat to soothe me.

The comfort was marginal, though. Laila might be safe for now, but someone had started that fire, likely waiting until I was gone and Laila was most vulnerable. With my being locked away here, she was still at risk. Until I could find my way back to her side, she was still in the worst kind of danger.

If anything happened to her, I would-

Through the bars around my cell, I heard movement.

From the cell beside mine, came a voice, “I don’t know you.”

The lighting in the cells was dim, with only the few swinging bulbs in the hallway offering any kind of light. Even then, some of those bulbs had burned out.

But as my vision adjusted, I could see the outline of a grizzled looking werewolf male. Old enough to be my father. With how outgrown and shaggy his hair and beard was, and from the smell, I imagined that he had been down here a long time.

The man was likely lonely, having been cooped up for so long, and looking for any conversation. I didn’t begrudge him anything, but I wasn’t in the mood to chitchat. There was too much at stake here.

Why would Richard lock me up? Had I truly been that out of control?

Or was there something else going on?

“You aren’t from around here,” the man in the cell beside mine continued. “I can tell just looking at you. You’re an Alpha, but you aren’t Lycan.”

“I’m not looking for conversation,” I said. Standing, I walked toward the door of my cell. Wrapping my hands around the bars, I gently tested the strength of the lock keeping me prisoner. It was sturdy. Even with my werewolf strength, I wouldn’t be able to break it easily. To do so would create enough noise that half the pack would be able to hear it.

If I wanted to sneak my way back to Laila, that wouldn’t be the way to do it.

Sighing, I stepped back from the door. I’d have to think of a different plan.

“If you are here,” the man continued. “Does that mean Richard’s plot to take over the kingdorn has begun?”

1 froze, the words striking straight through me as though they had been an icy spear. Thawing only slightly, Iturned, trying to see this man more clearly in the dark

Who was he? Why would he ask that?

“What did you just say?” I asked again, to be clear.
